The Michigan Emergency Department Improvement Collaborative (MEDIC, http://www.medicqi.org/) is a statewide quality improvement effort funded by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan/Blue Care Network with the Coordinating Center housed at the University of Michigan. MEDIC?s vision is to support emergency physicians working together to improve patient care. MEDIC is part of a family of projects called Collaborative Quality Initiatives (CQIs) within the Value Partnerships program (http://www.valuepartnerships.com/), making health care work better across the state of Michigan. MEDIC focuses on care decisions made in the emergency department for children and adults. Working collaboratively with a network of partner hospitals, we leverage the MEDIC data registry with shared knowledge and experience of participating sites to provide timely feedback on quality performance measures to improve the care of our patients through dissemination and implementation of best practices. There are currently over 60 hospitals in the Collaborative with plans to continue expansion annually supported by an infrastructure of the MEDIC clinical data registry hosted by a third-party vendor.

We are seeking a Data Manager who uses their impeccable attention to detail, critical thinking skills, and data administration knowledge to help take MEDIC?s work to the next level. This individual will act as a liaison with our third-party registry vendor and participating hospitals to ensure essential data streams are reliable, accurate, and displayed in an easy-to-comprehend manner. Additionally, this individual will take a lead role in managing MEDIC?s data projects including meeting deliverable schedule planning and coordination. This is a primarily remote position that will require occasional travel to the MEDIC office in Ann Arbor as well as infrequent statewide travel. Responsibilities*

  • Lead project management of MEDIC's internal weekly data meetings including but not limited to:
    • Collecting and preparing weekly meeting agenda items
    • Coordinating project follow-up with internal and external investigators as needed
    • Tracking status of new, ongoing, and closed projects including documented data use, storage, and deletion
    • Taking and disseminating meeting notes
    • Co-chair and project manage MEDIC's Data and Publications Committee along with our physician data lead including but not limited to
    • Managing committee membership roster, expectations, and relevant committee guidelines
    • Partner with committee physician lead to ensure committee policies are maintained and new proposals are appropriately routed through the committee process for review and approval
    • Work with MEDIC administrator to schedule and manage agenda items for quarterly committee meetings
  • Provide project management of MEDIC's data centric work and analysis
  • Track and support data needs for MEDIC-related analyses from inception to publication to responsible destruction of data
  • Help manage quarterly release updates with registry vendor for clinical abstraction platform and reports, including new feature and content development, JIRA ticket creation, iterative content refinement, error testing, validation, and approval
  • Responsible for monthly data upload process for each of our 60+ sites, including data cleansing, troubleshooting, and interfacing with our registry vendor
  • Conduct an annual data audit
  • Collaborate with new and existing sites; IT contacts to create and/or update electronic data files
  • Resolve ad-hoc data issues and requests
  • Assist the MEDIC project team in measure development and improvement of data analysis policies and procedures
  • Help design and edit clinical abstraction modules for existing and future quality improvement initiatives, with a focus on the input and output of data
  • Assist with technical design, testing, and validation of new and existing Tableau reports including documentation of issues and resolutions
  • Manage access and permissions to a variety of internal and external user platforms (i.e., shared drives, Tableau, etc.)
  • Responsible for documentation and maintenance of all data-related policies and procedures
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications*

  • A bachelor's degree
  • Critical thinking skills as demonstrated by the ability to identify data errors and patterns
  • Proven analytical skills that allow the individual to suggest plausible root causes and offer solutions for increasing accuracy of the data
  • Ability to handle confidential information with care and adhere to HIPAA guidelines for information dissemination
  • Proven skill and interest in acting as a project management lead for data projects
  • Creative and flexible approach to continuous improvement
  • Ability to work independently while handling multiple assignments and deadlines
  • Values collaborative teamwork, can be flexible and successful working in a small, highly motivated team
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software
  • Successful experience in collaboration with others in a team environment
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to successfully work with all levels of faculty and staff
  • Ability to travel within the state of Michigan for collaborative-wide meetings 3 times per year (various locations such as Traverse City, Grand Rapids, Detroit, etc.)

Senior - Minimum 5 years of applicable work experience

Intermediate - Minimum 3 years of applicable work experience

Desired Qualifications*

  • Proficiency in T-SQL, ability to understand Python (data manipulation & automation) and Excel VBA, with the willingness and excitement to expand upon those skills to create their own code to solve questions
  • Experience with the following software: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio, Tableau, JIRA, Zendesk, SharePoint, Microsoft Power Platform
  • Experience with ETL processes and tools for building and maintaining healthcare data pipelines
  • Familiarity with healthcare data, including ICD-10 codes and CPT codes

Work Locations

*Note: This position is primarily remote, with occasional in-person work in Ann Arbor, MI required.

Background Screening
