Job Summary
The Director of NIL and Athlete Engagement will provide strategic support to optimize institutional Name, Image, and Likeness initiatives and foster a supportive environment for student-athlete personal and professional development. The role will be responsible for streamlining athlete license agreement management, development and execution of student-athlete programming, and ensuring operational efficiency related to NIL events and activations.
Responsibilities*
Revenue Share Implementation
- Onboard athletes to relevant NIL platforms, including but not limited to, NIL Go, Hyperwallet, Compass, Teamworks Wallet, Teamworks Influencer, and Student Athlete Score
- Oversee athlete NIL deal and disclosure systems (e.g., Teamworks Influencer, NIL Go), including deal status, payor management and business vetting
- Manage approvals for passive use of athlete NIL in institutional marketing and promotional materials and ensuring alignment with Athlete License Agreements
- Monitor use of institutional IP in NIL-related activations to ensure compliance with License Agreement and institutional NIL policy
NIL Programming
- Collaborate with Leadership Development and/or Michigan Athletic Career Center to develop and coordinate NIL education, programming and training experiences
- Manage logistics for NIL events and workshops, including room reservations, speaker scheduling, materials preparation, and coordinating with internal and external partners
- Review and evaluate third-party proposals, manage exploratory discussions and follow up communications, and redirect to Victors Exchange or Michigan Sports Properties when appropriate
- Coordinate external support for NIL-related projects, including student-led initiatives, class collaborations, and MAP Project
- Oversee inquiries and manage timely communications for inquiries sent to Athletics-NIL email inbox
Athlete Marketing Support
- Provide direct support to student-athletes to include one-on-one meetings, sharing resources, engaging Zelle Entrepreneurship Legal Clinic, and other NIL inquiries
- Serve as point of contact with Michigan Sports Properties to support brand partnerships and athlete activations, to include prospecting, athlete scheduling, and on-site support
- Establish and maintain internal athlete CRM (via Teamworks) to track preferences, agent/representation authorizations, NIL interest survey attributes, and exclusive marketing partners as reported by athletes
- Oversee athlete and business onboarding to Victors Exchange; provide regular activity reports including total athletes, businesses, and deals facilitated
- Produce performance and social media analytics reports using Student Athlete Score and assist athletes with engagement reports as needed
- Collaborate with Communications and Digital and Creative Content teams to amplify athlete storytelling and branding
Policy Management and Internal Communications
- Build and manage a centralized NIL Reference Library and Resource Hub for coaches, staff, administrators, and athletes, to include institutional and NIL policies, educational content, and NIL opportunities
- Maintain a comprehensive NIL calendar highlighting activations, key deadlines, and events
- Lead team meetings and educational sessions in coordination with Compliance to reinforce NIL policies, resources, and programs
- Maintain NIL website and digital content to ensure public-facing information is current and compliant
- Draft and distribute marketing materials and communications to promote NIL partnerships, educational opportunities, and department updates (e.g., social media, Those Who Go Blue, M Magazine)
Required Qualifications*
- Bachelor's Degree required
- Minimum 3 years of experience
- Experience in athletics administration, NIL operations, student-athlete development, or brand/partnership management
- Fundamental knowledge of NCAA, institutional, and state-level NIL policies and procedures
- Strong project management, organizational, and communication skills
- Experience working with digital platforms such as Teamworks or comparable CRM systems
- Previous experience in a high-visibility intercollegiate athletics program
