Job Summary
Under direction of the supervisor for Emergency Department Registration, the Patient Registration Specialist Lead coordinates the work, solves problems, and acts as subject matter expert for the department. Ensures efficient operation while emphasizing complete and accurate registration, insurance verification, and copayment collection. The Patient Registration Specialist Lead assists the supervisor in establishing performance goals and targets in keeping with the customer service standards of the department. Provides input and monitors standard processes for providing service using LEAN methodology. Assists in ensuring the quality and productivity of staff.

Responsibilities*
- Collects and verifies patient demographic, guarantor, payer and physician information including name, date of birth, Social Security number, sex, address, phone, language, ethnicity, race, religion, emergency contacts, primary care physician, and payer(s)
- Utilizes real-time eligibility to verify coverage is active. Utilizes payer websites and tools to obtain payer information
- Collects copayments and past balances, answering basic questions about reason for the amount due and referring more complex account questions to patient financial counselors
- Identifies financially at-risk patients and families, connecting them with appropriate resources for assistance
- Obtains patient's and /or responsible party's signature on Notice of Privacy Practice, General Consent, Important Message From Medicare and other compliance forms
- Applies LEAN in Daily Work Principles - value metrics, huddles, ELI's A3's; proficient at owning issues from identification to resolution
- Promotes a positive image to patients and families, visitors, physicians and other customers by adhering to Michigan Medicine's Core Values
- Assists with coordinating staffing and coverage for open shifts in two 24x7 emergency departments
- Assists supervisor with monitoring staff productivity and quality assurance assessments to ensure that department standards are met
- Coaches and mentors as needed
- Enroll staff into classes
- Provides input to supervisor on performance of staff members and observations in the unit
- Participates in interview process
- Participates with staff meeting agenda planning and taking meeting minutes
- Assess and communicates unit supply needs to supervisor
- Inputs data and generates reports on key performance indicators for emergency department registration
Required Qualifications*
High school diploma or G.E.D; 3+ years of experience, customer-focused interpersonal and communication skills; computer literacy; ability to enter a substantial amount of data while maintaining a high level of accuracy.
Desired Qualifications*
Healthcare registration and billing experience; two years of work experience in an office or customer service setting with an outstanding record of attendance and punctuality; knowledge of group health plans, government health plans, automobile and workers compensation plans; knowledge of Michigan Medicine policies, procedures, regulatory requirements and information systems; work experience in a health care setting; Associate's or Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience and education.
Work Schedule
Hours: Wednesday 3p-3a, Thursday 3p-11p, Friday 3p-3a, Saturday 3p-11p

Background Screening
Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
