Job Summary
The Internal Medicine Division of Rheumatology Sclerolab research focuses on studying the mechanisms of organ fibrosis and identifying novel targeted treatment strategies. The team is looking for a Research Lab Specialist Intermediate responsible for independently designing, executing, and troubleshooting complex experiments, while simultaneously ensuring the efficient and compliant day-to-day operation of the lab.

Responsibilities*
Experimental Design and Execution
- Independent Research: Following overall research objectives, independently design, plan, conduct, and troubleshoot highly complex experiments to advance the lab's understanding of organ fibrosis.
- Molecular & Cell Biology Expertise: Apply fundamental and advanced techniques, including but not limited to:
- DNA, RNA, and Protein isolation, purification, and expression studies (e.g., Western Blotting).
- Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR).
- Advanced cell culture, primary cell isolation, and transient/stable transfection methods.
- Immunology and Flow Cytometry: Perform and analyze immunological assays such as ELISA and multi-color flow cytometry.
- Animal Models experience preferred: Utilize prior in-depth training to handle and manage rodent animal models (including transgenic lines), perform surgical procedures, dissections, and specialized techniques like blood collection.
Data Analysis and Dissemination
- Data Integrity: Coordinate comprehensive data collection, screening, and verification processes to ensure accuracy and reproducibility.
- Scientific Interpretation: Interpret complex experimental results and apply analysis outcomes to inform and refine future research methodology.
- Scientific Contribution: Actively contribute to the lab's intellectual property by co-authoring publications and co-presenting research findings with the Principal Investigator at professional meetings and conferences.
Laboratory Operations and Compliance
- Lab Oversight: Provide day-to-day operational oversight, ensuring the lab runs efficiently, safely, and in full compliance with institutional and regulatory standards.
- Mentorship and Training: Train and mentor junior lab members, students, and technicians on proper research techniques, equipment operation, and lab procedures.
- Resource Management: Manage laboratory inventory, supply ordering, and procurement processes (including financial tracking) to maintain adequate stock and budget control.
Required Qualifications*
Intermediate level:
- Bachelors degree in biology, biochemistry, or a recognized field of science directly related to the lab.
- 4-5 years experience in a related field.
Associate Level:
- Bachelors degree in biology, biochemistry, or a recognized field of science directly related to the lab.
- 1-3 years experience in a related field
Desired Qualifications*
- Master's degree or higher and 4 to 5 years related experience.

Additional Information
This is a term-limited appointment for 1 year. At the end of the stated term, your appointment will terminate, and will not be eligible for Reduction-in-Force (RIF) benefits. This term-limited appointment does not create a contract or guarantee of employment for any period of time as you will remain subject to disciplinary or other performance measures, up to and including termination, at the will of the University in accordance with existing University policy and standards for employee performance and conduct.
Background Screening
Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act.
