Job Summary

The Criminal Justice Administrative Records System (CJARS) at the University of Michigan invites applications for a full-time position of Post-Doctoral Research Fellow. The Post-Doctoral Research Fellow will be a part of the CJARS team and launch a number of planned research projects that leverage the data infrastructure. CJARS is a next-generation criminal justice data infrastructure initiative to support evidence-based criminal justice policy making and administration and is developed through a partnership between the University of Michigan and the U.S. Census Bureau.

Responsibilities*

In collaboration with the project's PI, the Post-Doctoral Research Fellow will contribute to the scientific aims of CJARS, including but not limited to:

  • Conducting analysis of CJARS data linked with other federal data resources in the Federal Statistical Research Data Center (FSRDC) network in support of the scientific aims of CJARS;
  • Developing and leading new research projects in coordination with the PI with potential grant development and writing as needed;
  • Managing the effort of research assistants to support research projects; and

Competencies

  • Self-motivation and the ability to work independently to develop research ideas, questions, methods, and analytic plans.
  • Knowledge and understanding of data science, probabilistic matching methods, or U.S. criminal justice research literature strongly preferred.
  • Proven ability to work with and analyze criminal justice administrative data.
  • Strong project management skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and ability to maintain positive relationships with various stakeholders required.
  • Strong time management skills with a proven ability to multitask and to prioritize and successfully complete projects on tight deadlines with little supervision.

Required Qualifications*

A Ph.D. in Economics, Public Policy, or equivalent field with a focus on the economics of crime. Ability to pass a federal background investigation to secure Special Sworn Status with the U.S. Census Bureau. Proven background in analyzing criminal justice administrative data.

This is a two-year term-limited position with the possibility for an extension to a third year.
