Responsibilities*

Basic Function and Responsibility

To provide day-to-day technical and administrative supervision of personnel performing testing and reporting test results in the chemical pathology laboratory.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Maintain expertise in all areas under supervision to be able to adequately assess performance of staff and instrumentation and to provide assistance in event of short staffing situations.

  2. Review Quality Control and instrument function reports to ensure that acceptable levels of analytical performance are maintained.

  3. Ensure that all remedial actions are taken before and after patient results are reported whenever test systems deviate from established performance specifications.

  4. Monitor sample processing to ensure accuracy and quality assurance goals are met.

  5. Oversee orientation and training of all personnel performing laboratory testing.

  6. Schedule employees to provide adequate and equitable staffing of all areas.

  7. Develop competency assessment programs annually for each employee.

  8. Develop performance objectives for each employee and conduct formal reviews at least annually.

  9. Work in cooperation with other supervisors and directors to optimize workflow within the laboratory and continually improve operations.

  10. Participate in planning and projecting changes in the laboratory.

  11. Assist, as needed, with hiring of new staff and selection/development of new assays and instrumentation.

  12. Implement new policies and procedures.

  13. Fulfill departmental continuing education requirement.

Supervision Received

Functional supervision is received from the Core Lab Managers and Laboratory Directors.

Supervision Exercised

Technical and administrative supervision is exercised over Allied Health Staff and non-pathology testing personnel.

Required Qualifications*

In order to be considered for this position the applicant must have met or will have met all the required qualifications prior to the start date of employment.

A baccalaureate degree in Medical Technology or in a chemical, physical, or biological science is required. Certification by an accrediting agency and four years of clinical lab experience is required.

Requires frequent standing, walking, sitting and hand pipetting for extended periods of time and the ability to lift 50 lbs.

  6. The ability to objectively evaluate new concepts in laboratory operation and organization.

Modes of Work

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

Work Schedule

This full time, 40 hour exempt position is on the midnight shift and will typically receive an average of 24 hrs/wk (60%) to accomplish their extra duties. This will vary at the manager's discretion based on the amount of supervisory work pending, and the patient work or other projects that must be completed. This position will participate in rotating weekends, holidays and on-call.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.
