Job Summary
The Frankel Cardiovascular Center Quality & Safety Program is hiring a Vascular Surgery Quality Specialist to support cardiovascular quality and safety efforts across the inpatient and ambulatory domains.
As a Quality Specialist, you will be responsible for comprehensive registry data management, including clinical registry data collection, validation, submission, analysis, and reporting. The specialist co-leads evidence-based clinical quality improvement and supports accreditation. Key responsibilities also include facilitating quality assurance meetings and morbidity and mortality conferences.
This position reports to the Frankel Cardiovascular Center Quality & Safety Program Manager. You may be eligible for remote and/or flexible work opportunities at the discretion of the hiring department. Flexible work agreements are reviewed annually and are subject to change dependent on the business needs of the hiring department, throughout the course of employment.
Administrative supervision is received from the Frankel CVC Quality & Safety Program Manager. Functional supervision is received from the Vascular Surgery faculty.
Responsibilities*
15% - Clinical registry management
Manage the BMC2 Vascular and the Society of Vascular Surgeons (SVS) Vascular Quality Initiative (VQI) registries. Responsible for consecutive case identification, data validation and submission, and new team member training.
Maintain expert-level knowledge of registry inclusion/exclusion criteria, definitions, and FAQs. May attend regional and national registry and/or quality conferences to this end.
Lead efforts to improve data accuracy and quality. Facilitate external audits, BMC2 peer review, and internal registry inter-rater reliability processes.
Synthesize and analyze large quantities of information to create succinct communications that inform and influence decision-making. Develop, prepare, maintain and distribute reports.
Support quality-related research and scholarship. Obtain data from the BMC2 Vascular registry, SVS VQI registries, or adjunct data sources in response to appropriate requests from Vascular Surgery faculty, staff, or learners.
30% - Continuous improvement
Review and conduct analyses of clinical and adjunct data to identify opportunities for improvement. Prioritize quality improvement activities in conjunction with the Vascular Surgery physician quality lead and the FCVC Quality & Safety Program Manager.
Monitor mortalities, adverse events, and safety events. Complete a comprehensive review when requested. Participate in corrective action planning as assigned.
Provide analytic and administrative support to the Vascular Surgery morbidity and mortality conference.
Support the development, implementation, and evaluation of quality improvement initiatives in partnership with clinical faculty and staff. Leads and/or provide project management support to clinical quality improvement teams.
Collaborate with the FCVC Quality & Safety Team, the University of Michigan Health Quality Department, the regional BCBS CQI, industry partners, and peer organizations to ensure evidence-based clinical practice optimization.
Collaborate with faculty to enhance clinical documentation for the purpose of improving performance in registry, regulatory, or quality reporting (e.g., USNWR, Vizient Q&A).
Provide education to faculty, trainees, advanced practice providers, and staff about quality measures and ongoing process improvement activities.
Maintain expert-level knowledge of vascular surgery regulatory requirements. In partnership with the Frankel Cardiovascular Center Quality & Safety Program Manager, ensure program compliance with published clinical practice guidelines/expert consensus documents and all other federal, local, and University guidelines.
45% - Clinical abstraction
Perform timely and accurate chart level abstraction. Validate case data utilizing relevant expertise and clinical judgment. Clarify documentation with clinical faculty and staff as needed.
Capable of understanding, interpreting, and applying complex data definitions or specifications manuals to data abstraction. Capable of explaining definition nuances to clinicians and administrators.
10% - Other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications*
Ability to reliably attend virtual meetings.
Bachelor's degree in healthcare or related field.
Relevant experience in cardiovascular direct patient care, healthcare research, clinical quality, or patient safety.
- Experience with clinical data collection and/or reporting; specifically, analyzing or interpreting processes, clinical outcomes, and costs of care.
- Experience with Plan-Do-Study-Act cycles, quality improvement initiatives and/or project management.
Experience working with diverse teams and multiple stakeholders. Demonstrated problem solving and conflict resolution skills.
Exceptional organization and attention to detail. Able to consistently meet deadlines in a fast paced and changing environment with multiple competing tasks and priorities.
Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and free from immediate direction within the scope of responsibility and a team-focused framework.
Experience navigating electronic medical record software, databases and/or clinical registry software. Proficiency with Microsoft software applications.
Some overnight travel may be required for registry-related meetings and conferences.
LEAD Level Required Qualifications:
At least 8 years of experience with clinical data collection and/or reporting; specifically, analyzing or interpreting processes, clinical outcomes, and/or costs of care.
SENIOR Level Required Qualifications:
- At least 5 years of experience with clinical data collection and/or reporting; specifically, analyzing or interpreting processes, clinical outcomes, and/or costs of care.
Desired Qualifications*
Clinical direct patient care experience in vascular surgery or interventional radiology.
Recent experience with cardiovascular registries.
Relevant professional certification such as Six Sigma or CPHQ.
