Master Maintenance Technician

Facilities Management (FM) is offering an excellent opportunity for a 2nd shift Master Maintenance Technician to support the department’s goal of providing consistent, cost-effective, and reliable service in the University academic maintenance Zones. This role involves maintaining both historic and modern facilities, including Thomas Jefferson’s Academical Village, which features the Rotunda, Pavilions, Lawn & Range Student Rooms, as well as contemporary classroom buildings.
Master Maintenance Technicians are responsible for performing advanced troubleshooting, repairs, and preventative maintenance service across a broad range of building systems, including but not limited to HVAC, electrical, plumbing, access control and life safety systems. This position serves as a technical leader, front line responder and mentor to junior technicians, ensuring quality service and operational efficiency across academic maintenance facilities.
Facilities Management (FM) supports the University of Virginia's wide range of research, academic and patient care programs. With over 1,100 employees dedicated to excellence, Facilities Management is responsible for the day-to-day operation, repair, and maintenance of UVA's buildings, infrastructure, and grounds as well as other University-owned and leased properties.
Note: the scheduled shift for this position is M-F 3:30pm – 12-midnight.
Duties include:
Perform installation, repair, and maintenance in multiple building trades including but not limited to HVAC, plumbing, and electrical according to diagrams and manuals.
Work independently to respond and troubleshoot customer requests and emergency service calls.
Diagnoses maintenance issues quickly and develops effective, long-lasting solutions with minimal disruption to university operations.
Balance routine maintenance, PM schedules, and urgent service requests to meet University expectations.
Mentor, instruct, and coach those with less knowledge, experience, or skills so they are able to demonstrate increased knowledge or skills sufficient to perform job functions satisfactorily.
Maintain accurate daily logs of jobs and provide feedback to alternate shifts and supervisors.
Inform customers of job status and reasons for and duration of expected delays.
Foster a safe work environment by instructing and monitoring compliance of OSHA, federal, state, and local regulations.
Maintain accurate records on CMMS and Timecards.
Attend safety meetings, classes, and training seminars as directed by the supervisor to keep informed of safety issues and safe working practices.
Ensure all safety equipment and personal protective equipment are used.
Stay current with university policies, sustainability goals, and new technologies (e.g., smart building systems).
Maintain a courteous, respectful demeanor while working in diverse campus environments, including historic and high-profile spaces.
Required Qualifications:
Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience: A minimum of 4 years of journeyman level experience in HVAC, electrical or plumbing trades, plus journeyman level experience in at least one other trade. Preference will be given to candidates licensed in two or more trades.
Licensure: Journeyman level license in at least one trade; Valid Driver's license with zero or positive points balance and at least 2 years of driving experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
Journeyman level license in more than one trade
Anticipated Compensation: $36 - $40 per hour ($74,880 - $83,200 annually), commensurate with experience and qualifications. This position is eligible for additional shift differential pay of $2 per hour.

For this position, the selected candidate will need to complete the required background checks prior to the start date of the position.
Physical Demands: Employee must be able to variously sit, stand, walk, climb stairs and ladders, crawl, stoop, bend, squat, lift, pull, and use both hands-on repetitive tasks (including overhead tasks). Employee must have normal vision and hearing (correctable), and for some areas of employment, color vision and sense of smell.
