The University of Virginia is seeking a Laboratory Technician 2 position to assist in environmental fluid mechanics research within the lab of Prof. Matthew Reidenbach (https://reidenbach.evsc.virginia.edu) within the Department of Environmental Sciences (https://evsc.as.virginia.edu).

The employee in this position will be expected to perform the following tasks:

  • Utilize output of computer simulations of ocean water levels to determine impacts of hurricanes on flooding in the Chesapeake Bay region.
  • Develop flood maps for Norfolk, VA utilizing Geographic Information System (GIS) software.
  • Assist in field work at UVA’s Coastal Research Center, located in Oyster VA.
  • Assist in writing, editing, and figure production for scientific publications.
  • Maintain laboratory, computer, and field instrumentation.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Minimum Requirements

Education: Associate’s degree

Experience: At least 2 years of lab experience which may include student experience. Bachelor's degree in related science will be considered in lieu of experience.

Preferred Requirements:

  • A bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences or related fields. Work experience in related fields of engineering, oceanography, and/or marine science may be considered sufficient.
  • An understanding of GIS and working with land use/land cover data.
  • Some experience working in a laboratory or a coastal field setting.

Physical Demands

This position will require working in a laboratory and working outside at UVA’s Coastal Research Center. Field work may include riding in a boat to field sites, moving equipment up to 50 lbs, and ability to work in muddy and/or wet environments. This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.

More Information

The anticipated hiring range for this position is $20.00 - $21.00/hr, commensurate with education and experience

  • This position has a term limit of 1-year after which continued employment will depend on department need and funding.

This position is based in Charlottesville, VA, and is not eligible for remote work.
