Laboratory and Research Technician, Smith Lab - Asthma, Allergy and Immunology

The Smith lab at the University of Virginia in the Division of Asthma, Allergy and Immunology is seeking a full time The Laboratory and Research Technician 1 or 2 to perform a variety of laboratory and/or research tasks in support of research and teaching. The candidate will be responsible for a variety of standard procedures that range from routine to specialized in the areas of cleaning and decontamination; media preparation; performing standard/routine laboratory testing; preparing samples; assisting in routine surgical procedures; maintaining animal health and welfare; recording data, and operating and maintaining tools and equipment.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Applies knowledge of sanitation techniques and laboratory safety.
- Applies knowledge of research and testing procedures and techniques, and of animal handling, care and welfare.
- Performs a variety of procedures supporting laboratory, research, clinical and necropsy services.
- May provide limited surgical assistance.
- Follows established directions and procedures.
- Frequent contacts with co-workers, supervisors, students, faculty, and research staff to discuss study techniques or results or handling and care of animals.
- In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Lab and Research Tech 1
Education: High school diploma or equivalent
Experience: At least 1 year of lab experience, which may include student experience. Bachelor's degree will be considered in lieu of experience.
Lab and Research Tech 2
Education: Associate's degree
Experience: At least 2 years of lab experience which may include student experience. Bachelor's degree in related science will be considered in lieu of experience.
PREFFERED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelors degree in related field
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.
Salary will be commensurate with education and experience. This is a non-exempt-level, benefited position. Learn more about UVA benefits. This is a restricted position, which is dependent on funding and is contingent upon funding availability.
