The University of Virginia Athletics Department is seeking candidates for the position of Director/Senior Director for Compliance who will research, plan, document, and execute operational activities of a compliance program. They are knowledgeable about complex legal and regulatory issues potentially impacting University operations, have solid grasp of strategic priorities, and operate with considerable autonomy. They are distinguished by their experience and depth of knowledge, and may interface with governmental entities by submitting reports and other required documentation, and by handling on-site audits.

The Director/Senior Director of Compliance is responsible for work required to comply with all NCAA, ACC and University rules and regulations. The incumbent provides pertinent and timely compliance information to various internal and external constituencies, responding to questions and interpreting regulations when necessary. The incumbent will also assist with other compliance duties that support the overall objectives of the compliance program.

The incumbent routinely analyzes situations, provides interpretation, identifies recommendations, initiates action, and provides guidance on all matters pertaining to their duties. Frequently coordinates meetings, disseminates information, and provides instruction to various internal and external constituencies. Monitors processes and systems to ensure compliance with rules and regulations. Uses initiative and experience to resolve issues pertaining to the comprehensive compliance program. Works closely with individuals and groups in an effort to build relationships and promote the compliance program. Accountable for NCAA, ACC and University rules and regulations and submitting documentation as required by governing bodies. Works under general supervision and reports to the Senior Associate Athletics Director for Legal & Regulatory Affairs.

Knowledge & Responsibilities:

  • Primary Contact for Several Teams – Office responsibilities are primarily assigned by sport. Responsibility includes managing all aspects of compliance selected sports.
  • NCAA Governance – Monitor, analyze and educate relevant stakeholders about pending NCAA proposals.
  • Rules Education – Provide education to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Violations, Waivers, & Reinstatements – Investigate allegations. Prepare violation reports, waivers, and reinstatements.
  • APR, GSR & NCAA Required Reports – Manage and submit APR, GSR and NCAA required reports.
  • State & Federal Laws – Monitor and analyze state and federal legislative activity that impacts college athletics.
  • Title IX, House Settlement, & Roster Management – Ensure teams are complying with relevant provisions of Title IX, the NCAA v. House settlement, and related issues.
  • Name, Image & Likeness – This position may assist with the management and oversight of the submission of student-athlete’s third party NIL deals into NIL Go.
  • Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Knowledge of procedures to monitor and enforce rules and regulations.
  • Ability and desire to perform accurate, detail-oriented work, manage multiple tasks simultaneously, and maintain confidentiality and a professional demeanor.
  • Ability to make administrative/procedural decisions and sound judgments.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to develop interpersonal relationships with student-athletes, coaches, and administrative staff.
  • Ability to meaningfully collaborate on complex issues with other members of the Athletics Compliance Office.

Minimum Requirements

Education: Bachelor's degree. Four years of relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.

Preferred Education: Juris Doctorate

Experience: Four years of relevant experience in Intercollegiate Athletics Compliance or relevant comparable experience (e.g., government/regulatory experience, legal experience).

Physical Demands

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
