The University of Virginia’s School of Nursing seeks a Director of Communications and Marketing. The Director of Communications and Marketing serves as the school’s primary leader for all communications, branding, and marketing initiatives with the overriding goal to increase visibility and positive engagement with the School’s internal and external key constituent audiences.

Maintaining a leadership presence focused on supporting the school’s strategic goals and other top priorities—set by the dean’s office and department leaders— in both internal and external channels, the director:

  • Clearly defines communications and marketing priorities in a cohesive and comprehensive working communications and marketing plan that is maintained within the dean’s office. This plan should be fully updated and discussed at least semesterly. A subset of this plan should include a recruitment and enrollment management section co-developed with Academic Operations and department leaders and managed by the director.
  • Ensures executive communication needs are met for the dean’s office, including drafting talking points for remarks and developing PowerPoints for key meetings.
  • Effectively captures the voice of the Dean of the School in print and digital communications and prepares the Dean for specific events/meetings to capture and note key insights, later integrating into strategic communications.
  • Proactively engages school stakeholders in content review and development, helping set the collective tone and increase buy-in for key messages. This includes convening a SON Communications and Marketing Advisory Board regularly that includes all associate deans and the Executive Director of Philanthropy. The director will use this advisory board to develop new ideas and workshop content and should set expectations that each member will regularly contribute content from their areas to inform messaging. The director should also create processes and structures that set expectations for how all SON faculty and staff are expected to engage in the work of telling the school’s story.
  • Partners with UVA Health marketing and communications colleagues, central communications offices, as well as PR agency partners on collaborative goals.

Through these partnership champions School of Nursing messages, promoting top messages to broader UVA/UVA Health outlets weekly to ensure maximum positive exposure for the school in line with other academic and UVA Health units.

  • Regularly solicit ideas and feedback from the school community by utilizing existing formal channels (ex. leading presentations at All School meetings or participating in degree program meetings).
  • Collaborates with other staff in SON, ensuring that appropriate human and financial resources are available, accessible, and fully engaged in support of comprehensive communications and marketing needs.
  • Supervises the School’s communications and marketing manager.
