Senior Finance Generalist - Department of Materials Science and Engineering

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering (DMSE) at the University of Virginia (UVA) is seeking a Senior Finance Generalist to oversee financial operations, which include budgeting, payroll, accounting, financial reporting, and capital equipment purchasing. Additional responsibilities involve ensuring the efficient use of departmental resources and adherence to financial regulations and policies.

The ideal candidate will analyze data to support strategic decision-making and will have a strong financial background along with the capability to deliver high-level operational support. They will serve as the financial liaison with the Dean’s Office of the Engineering School. They should make meaningful contributions on a daily basis and be willing to acquire new skills as the needs of the DMSE evolve.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A bachelor’s degree; relevant professional experience may substitute for a degree
  • Workday Financials proficiency (budgeting, period activity pay, costing allocations and adjustments, journal entries, expense reports, and reporting)
  • Advanced knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Possess strong organizational skills and a high level of attention to detail
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize multiple projects, manage conflicting demands efficiently, and work well under tight deadlines
  • Commitment to providing exceptional customer service
  • Ability to work well in a team or independently
  • Proven ability to adapt to change

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Preference will be given to candidates who are proficient in Workday Financials
  • Knowledge of University financial policies

This is primarily a sedentary position involving extensive computer use. Occasionally, the job requires attending meetings and events.
