Sports Turf Technician

The University of Virginia is a highly competitive Division I program committed to academic and athletic excellence. The Department of Athletics at the University of Virginia is now accepting applications for the position of Sports Turf Technician to provide turf and grounds maintenance services for the Department of Athletics in an effort to achieve operational excellence. Primary Responsibilities are maintaining the Softball and Track Facilities.
Additional responsibilities include:
- Exemplary customer service to internal and external constituencies
- performing repair.
- Maintenance and upkeep duties on grounds at various facilities that are utilized by the Athletics Department, student-athletes, sports fans and general public.
- Performing mechanical repairs.
- Assisting in the preparation, maintenance, and clean-up of outdoor athletic facilities for games, special events, and day-to-day operations.
- Assists, as needed, in set-up and teardown for sports related and various events.
- Assisting to ensure the proper care, use and maintenance of equipment, tools and supplies; and ensuring tasks are performed in a safe manner.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Experience in general grounds keeping and landscaping preferred.
- Ability to be extremely flexible in terms of work schedule (evenings, weekends, and overtime) required.
- Knowledge of the EPA guidelines for the application and storage of fertilizers and pest control chemicals preferred.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to comply with EPA and University guidelines for the application of fertilizers and pest control chemicals.
- Ability to assist in the care, usage and maintenance of small & tractor engines, power equipment and tools.
- Ability to assist daily in preparation, clean-up, and on site needs associated with the use of athletic facilities.
- Ability to ensure the safe use of grounds maintenance equipment.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education: High school diploma or equivalent
Experience: Two years of experience
Licensure: Valid driver's license. Driving forklift or other power industrial trucks requires CDL and may be required within 12-months of hire.
ABOUT THE POSITION
This is an overtime eligible, full time position with University benefits. The anticipated hiring range will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Employee will be required to lift various weights, climb ladders and stairs in order to complete jobs. The use of both hands and a repetitive motion will be required while performing duties.
