About the Department
UVA Health’s Inpatient Pharmacy serves an average daily census of 528 patients across the hospital. Our pharmacy technicians are essential to the safe and timely delivery of medications, working under the supervision of licensed pharmacists or independent practitioners.
What We Do
Pharmacy Technicians in this department:
- Prepare and label medications for inpatient use
- Deliver medications directly to nursing units and patient care areas
- Support clinical workflows and medication safety protocols
- Collaborate with pharmacists to ensure accuracy and efficiency
Note: Sterile compounding is performed in a newly renovated, state-of-the-art IV clean room. Technician roles within the IV Room will be described separately.

Minimum Qualifications
- Education: High School Graduate or Equivalent.
- Experience: No experience required.
- Licensure/Certifications: Registration as a Pharmacy Technician with the Virginia Board of Pharmacy within 2 years of hire required. Must register as a Pharmacy Technician Trainee upon hire with the Virginia Board of Pharmacy. Persons enrolled in a pharmacy technician training program must obtain a pharmacy technician trainee registration if they will be performing the duties of a pharmacy technician.
Preferred Qualifications
- Education: High School Graduate or Equivalent
- Experience: 6 months minimum relevant experience
- Licensure/Certifications: Commonwealth of Virginia Pharmacy Technician Registration required. CPhT credential through National Healthcareer Association (NHA) or Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) required. For team members hired prior to February 1, 2020, certification as CPhT through NHA or PTCB is required by January 31, 2022.
Physical Demands – Job requires standing for prolonged periods. Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull less than 20lbs.
Onboarding Requirements
Background checks and pre-employment health screenings will be conducted on all new hires prior to employment. All safety-sensitive positions with direct patient interaction also require a drug screen.
