The University of Virginia Library invites applications for a Shannon Library Public Services Manager to support the Information Services and Spaces team. The Information Services and Spaces team provides our patrons with access to collections, resources, and spaces as well as high-quality service to support them.

Working in the Information Services and Spaces (ISS) team, this position manages the Shannon Library circulation desks while supervising library staff and student workers. This position will work with the Director of ISS to set the vision for public services in the newly renovated Shannon Library and will work to implement this vision, while coordinating and working with public service managers at other locations. ISS will serve as the pulse of the newly renovated Shannon Library, and this position will communicate and collaborate across library departments to ensure the library is welcoming, runs smoothly, and facilitates access to information. This position reports to the Director of ISS. This is an exempt position at the University of Virginia. Normal work schedule will be Monday-Friday, traditional work hours. Additional hours outside of the normal schedule are expected to occasionally happen based upon the needs of the organization and our patrons.

Job Responsibilities

Manage Shannon Library circulation desk (35%)

  • Manages two circulation desks in the Shannon Library. Distributes information about desk policies and procedures to library staff and student assistants. Ensures that building is open and closed by staff and students according to schedule.
  • Works with Information Services & Spaces (ISS) team to coordinate circulation policies, procedures, and documentation. Helps examine and reevaluate procedures and policies on an ongoing basis.
  • Coordinates with ISS team to manage daily building operations, including setting the Shannon Library building hours, entering hours on online calendar, managing door locking and card swipe access, and creating signage.

Supervise full-time staff (20%)

  • Supervises two full-time staff positions (Night Manager and Library Coordinator) for the Shannon Library.
  • Manages employee workflows. Sets expectations that are clear, well communicated, and relate to the goals and objectives of the department. Provides frequent and constructive feedback, including interim and year-end evaluations. Mentors staff to grow in their jobs and to be prepared to move beyond their jobs.

Supervise student assistants (20%)

  • Recruits, interviews, hires, trains, and supervises a large group (possibly 30+) student assistants. Creates and monitors student schedules. Manages the online scheduling system. Manager will work closely with any Night Manager(s) to ensure consistent and coordinated student supervision.
  • Responsible for student worker budget within the Shannon Library cost center.

Direct patron services (15%)

  • Provides excellent direct circulation and basic reference customer service for users including explaining, interpreting, and enforcing policies and procedures. Grants exceptions to circulation policy when appropriate. Resolves problems to the mutual satisfaction of patrons and of the library.

Cross-area teamwork and special duties (10%)

  • Cross train Information Services & Spaces staff to ensure sufficient back-up staffing when needed.
  • Work on communication, planning, and problem solving in consultation with Facilities staff, LEO/ILL staff, IT staff, Financial Services staff, and other departments outside the library.
  • Special duties as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Master's degree in Library Science or other academic discipline
Experience: 5 years of relevant experience required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years of library or customer service experience.
  • 2+ years of direct supervisory experience, including goal setting, coaching, and performance evaluations.
  • Experience supervising both full-time staff and student workers.
  • Experience hiring federal work study students.
  • Experience managing a budget.
  • Experience with integrated library systems, and other library technology solutions.
  • Experience creating training resources and providing training to staff.
  • Ability to articulate a public services vision for a modern academic research library.

An ideal candidate communicates clearly in both speech and writing, provides courteous and efficient service to library patrons in person and by phone, and shows the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively as part of a team.

Physical Demands

Ability to push a full book cart and lift 15 pounds. This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs

Anticipated hiring range: $80,000 – $90,000, commensurate with education and experience.
