Chief of Financial Operations, Planning, and Analysis

The Chief of Financial Operations, Planning, and Analysis will serve as a strategic partner to executive leadership and leaders across UVA Health, overseeing financial operations and shared services initiatives that drive operational excellence, accuracy, compliance, and fiscal sustainability. This executive role will lead a team responsible for centralized back-office functions for all health system entities, including University Medical Center, Community Health, UVA Physicians Group, the School of Medicine, the School of Nursing, and the Claude Moore Health Sciences Library. Centralized functions include financial planning and analysis, financial reporting, decision support, cost accounting, health system finance policy, intercompany activity, and other areas, while also partnering across clinical and administrative divisions to implement strategic initiatives, system improvements, and process efficiencies. The Chief of Financial Operations, Planning, and Analysis ensures finance and shared services are strategically aligned to institutional priorities, optimizing resources, and advancing UVA Health’s capabilities in both long-term strategy and arising needs in response to internal, external, and industry-wide dynamics.
THE ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES
The Chief of Financial Operations, Planning, and Analysis will lead a team of dedicated professionals to shape the future of financial planning and analysis as UVA Health embarks on an ambitious 10-year plan. Key areas of responsibility for this role include:
Strategic Planning & Financial Leadership
Lead large-scale financial and operational initiatives aligned with organizational goals and serve as Finance Lead for ERP Transformation.
Align and integrate corporate finance functions across all entities to reduce redundancy in overhead and enable comprehensive assessment of health system impact across medical centers and provider groups.
Lead a long-range financial planning process, including systemwide capital planning, allocation and management, ensuring alignment with UVA Health’s strategic plan and major capital investment priorities.
Provide quarterly board reporting and routine updates to executive leadership and other stakeholders, highlighting performance and outcomes.
Evaluate and develop business cases for major financial, operational, and shared services initiatives, ensuring alignment with organizational priorities and return on investment.
Translate complex data into clear insights that inform strategic decision-making.
Operational Excellence
Provide guidance and oversight in collaboration with accounting, payroll, accounts payable, treasury, and other shared service functions to strengthen accuracy, compliance, and efficiency in core financial processes.
Champion process improvements, automation, and system modernizations that improve accuracy and timeliness of financial reporting and service delivery.
Sponsor and manage mission-critical, high-profile projects, ensuring timely execution and measurable impact.
Oversee performance standards and service-level agreements within shared services, ensuring consistent, high-quality support to clinical and administrative teams.
Lead efforts to integrate financial and shared services systems (e.g., ERP, clinical platforms) to improve data consistency, workflow efficiency, and reporting accuracy.
Identify and implement opportunities to reduce costs, eliminate redundancies, and enhance customer service across shared services.
Stakeholder Engagement & Collaboration
Coordinate involvement of cross-functional leaders, external consultants, and project teams to ensure alignment on financial and shared services initiatives.
Lead implementations, including process design, testing, training, rollout, and optimization across financial and shared service platforms.
Gather stakeholder feedback, analyze results, and embed lessons learned into future programs.
Serve as a champion of financial operational excellence and promote a culture of continuous improvement, encouraging adoption of standard tools, methodologies, and best practices across UVA Health that evolve with organizational needs.
Team Leadership
Lead, inspire, and manage a team through periods of organizational growth and transformation, ensuring stability, engagement, and performance.
Set clear objectives, provide regular feedback, and conduct performance reviews to support growth and continuous improvement.
Recruit, develop, and retain talented staff.
IDEAL EXPERIENCE & CHARACTERISTICS
Minimum Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field required; master’s degree (MBA, MHA, or equivalent). Certified Public Accountant (CPA) preferred.
Ten (10) years of progressive experience in financial operations, system implementations, accounting, and financial planning and analysis.
Competitive candidates are results-driven with strong financial aptitude and well-developed skills in areas including financial analysis, budgeting, forecasting/modeling, cost accounting, and decision support. The Chief of Financial Operations, Planning, and Analysis should demonstrate the ability to lead a team within UVA Health and to represent UVA Health with integrity across the wider University enterprise, as needed. Ideal candidates will preferably possess many or all of the following:
Demonstrated leadership of shared services or enterprise support functions, driven by a commitment to the utmost integrity.
Demonstrated experience with ERPs and other platforms (e.g., Workday, Epic, Anaplan, and Strata), preferably with implementation experience.
Significant experience with financial analysis, budget management, accounting principles, and strategic financial planning in a highly complex organization, preferably in an academic medical center, healthcare system, or similarly complex enterprise.
Demonstrated ability to lead and manage change with judgment and empathy, honoring institutional history and staff expertise.
Ability to make timely decisions in an ambiguous environment and in a collaborative manner while meeting UVA Health’s objectives.
Proactive and innovative thinker and problem‐solver.
Demonstrated ability to collaborate with various stakeholders across complex organizations, developing trust and effective relationships.
