Asset Manager

The Asset Manager is responsible for overseeing the organization’s capital asset management functions. This role will be responsible for ensuring effective asset tracking, financial analysis, compliance with accounting standards, and collaboration with key internal teams. The Asset Manager will supervise and support the asset management team while developing strategies for asset capitalization, inventory, and disposal.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee and manage all organizational assets, ensuring compliance with capitalization procedures and accounting principles.
- Supervise asset management personnel and provide guidance on best practices for tracking and reporting fixed assets.
- Conduct financial analysis of capital assets to assess performance, identify trends, and inform strategic decision-making.
- Prepare and review detailed reports on asset depreciation and overall asset lifecycle management.
- Assist in the development and oversight of the Equipment Trust Fund (ETF) process.
- Ensure adherence to Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) regulations and internal policies regarding capital asset management.
- Collaborate with procurement, operations, and finance teams to enhance asset management strategies.
- Coordinate with project teams to ensure Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) are accurately recorded and placed into service in a timely manner.
- Oversee and coordinate physical inventory procedures to ensure asset records align with actual holdings.
- Develop, implement, and maintain standard operating procedures for managing fixed assets.
- Perform additional asset management-related duties as required.
Other Duties
- Perform other related accounting or financial duties as assigned by Accounting Leadership.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Ensure the asset team’s balances for assigned accounts are reconciled within the first 10 days of the end of the month, unless other due dates have been assigned.
Key Qualifications/Certifications
Qualifications for the Asset Manager:
Required (Minimum):
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- 3+ years of progressively responsible accounting and/or fixed asset experience (preferably in higher ed, nonprofit, or governmental/fund accounting environment).
- Proven ability to identify and resolve reconciliation discrepancies and recommend process improvements.
- Experience with asset tracking systems and financial reporting tools.
- Knowledge of capital asset accounting principles and GASB regulations.
- Strong technical skills: advanced Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUP, etc.), familiarity with accounting software, and financial reporting tools.
- Significant work with complex reconciliations, cross-fund transfers, and financial analysis.
- Experience with reconciling complex accounts, journal entries, and month-end close.
- Excellent analytical, problem‐solving, and attention to detail.
- Strong communication skills — able to explain issues to non-accounting stakeholders.
- Ability to prioritize, work independently, and manage multiple deadlines in a dynamic environment.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team.
Preferred:
- 5+ years of experience in a government, public sector, or large corporate asset management environment.
- Proficiency with enterprise resource planning (ERP) such as Workday or fixed asset management software.
Additional Information
This position requires the ability to work onsite in Charlottesville, Virginia, approximately one to two days per week.

Anticipated hiring range of $120,000 - $140,000 per year based on experience and education/certifications.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education: Bachelor's degree required.
Experience: 5+ years of relevant professional experience, to include 2+ years of formal managerial experience required.
Licensure: None.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
