Financial Analyst - Office of Financial Planning & Analysis

The Financial Analyst supports the Office of Financial Planning & Analysis (OFP&A) by assisting with budget, planning, and financial analysis activities that enable effective resource management and informed decision-making across the University. This position provides analytical, reporting, and operational support to the team while developing foundational skills in budgeting, financial analysis, and university financial policies and systems.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Monitors and manages a team inquiry queue, triaging requests, responding to routine questions, and routing complex issues to appropriate team members in a timely manner.
- Performs routine and moderately complex financial analyses at the unit and institutional levels to support data-informed decision making, under guidance from senior team members.
- Assists with the interpretation and application of financial management policies, procedures, and operating practices.
- Supports the development, monitoring, and maintenance of financial plans, budgets, and forecasts.
- Provides analytical and administrative support for the annual budget process.
- Prepares standard reports, dashboards, and analyses; gathers and organizes financial data for review by senior analysts or managers.
- Works collaboratively with OFP&A colleagues and university partners to support budgeting and planning activities.
- Serves as a budget contact for one or more units, with supervision and support from senior staff.
- Identifies process improvement opportunities and suggests enhancements to reporting or workflows.
- Ensures compliance with financial policies and internal controls in assigned tasks.
- Prepare and process financial transactions, including journal entries, as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Skills & Abilities:
- Strong attention to detail and analytical mindset.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently on routine tasks and seek guidance when needed.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams).
- Willingness to learn financial systems, reporting tools, and budgeting processes.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiarity with budgeting, accounting, or financial reporting concepts.
- Knowledge of continuous improvement principles.
- Exposure to Salesforce or similar case-management systems (helpful for inquiry queue management).
- Interest in higher education finance or public sector budgeting.
- Experience balancing multiple tasks or priorities in a professional or academic setting.
- Experience working with diverse stakeholders or teams.
Eligible for telework but availability in Charlottesville preferred.
Anticipated Hiring Range: $60,000 - $75,000 per year based on experience and education.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education: Bachelor's degree required. Equivalent experience will be considered in lieu of degree.
Experience: 2+ years of relevant professional experience required.
Licensure: None.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
