Training and Transit Operations Specialist, Parking and Transportation

University Transit Service (UTS) at the University of Virginia's Department of Parking and Transportation is seeking a Training and Transit Operations Specialist. Our staff members work within the University Transit Service to provide transportation services to the University of Virginia community. Strong customer service skills and a commitment to safety are necessary. Duties include the operation of a transit bus unit, training unlicensed and licensed CDL holders to operate transit units, covering operational supervisory tasks, as well as transit operation in support of University-wide events. Selected candidates will be required to be able to drive any/all buses and support vehicles in the fleet.
Training and Transit Operations Specialists work within University Transit Service to provide transportation services to the University community. The Training and Transit Operations Specialist will work with unlicensed and licensed employees to safely teach them how to operate a transit unit and other transportation services. In addition, the Training Specialist must have a positive demeanor and enthusiasm for teaching others, as well as work ethic. The incumbent is also expected to operate transit units on fixed routes, as well as serve as a shift/road supervisor for fixed-route, paratransit, OnDemand, and other transportation services. Work is routinely monitored.
Note about work schedule: University Transit Service and Parking and Transportation have services that operate 24 hours per day / 7 days a week. This requires that all employees have flexibility with scheduling. Due to the dynamic nature of this position, successful candidates should expect to be assigned to evening, night, and weekend hours, depending on service level and coverage needs.
- Training Specialist
- Teach employees to obtain their commercial drivers' license to comply with the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles and Transportation regulations.
- Teach employees to operate a transit unit safely on fixed-route and charter service to comply with standard University Transit Service operating procedures.
- Teach employees to operate paratransit and on-demand services.
- Always possess a positive and cheerful demeanor while working with fellow employees.
- Supervisor
- Serve as a shift supervisor when training hours are unavailable.
- Respond to emergencies on route, investigate accidents, plan and establish route detours, and data entry.
- Supervisory components include all transportation services, including, but not limited to: fixed-route, charters, OnDemand, and paratransit.
- Control GPS and scheduling interface.
- Bus Driver
- Serve as bus driver when training hours are unavailable.
- Operate transit buses safely by applying established defensive driving principles.
- Follow standard University Transit Service operating procedures and comply with Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles and Transportation regulations.
- Ensure that all appropriate logs are kept and that any information affecting safe vehicle operation is reported.
Responsibilities
- Creating a welcoming, informative, and structured atmosphere for new UTS staff
- Maintaining and developing CDL knowledge base for training applications
- Emulating UTS values, policies, and procedures and leading by example for other UTS staff
- Monitor and serve as the operational first point of contact for UTS services
- Operate passenger-carrying commercial vehicles
Minimum Qualifications
Education: High School Graduate or Equivalent.
Experience: Two years of transit driving experience.
Licensure: A valid Virginia Commercial Driver's License Type A or B with Passenger and Air Brake endorsements, with a positive points balance is required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience: Two (2) or more years of fixed-route transit experience.
Physical Demands
Safe operation of a transit bus requires sustained sitting, driving, pushing/pulling (steering wheel and various controls), repetitive motion, use of both hands, use of either hand, fine finger manipulation, and wrist movement. Safe operation also includes repetitive motion with both ankles/feet, with both possessing the strength and dexterity to fully depress the service brake and accelerator (right) and turn signal controls (left) present on the transit bus units within the Parking and Transportation fleet.
Boarding/alighting the transit bus requires the ability to climb stairs (at least one step up/down). Successful operation of ADA Accessible equipment aboard the transit bus requires bending, lifting, and carrying.
Work performed during special events and as part of servicing the equipment requires standing, traveling, and the potential for bending, lifting, and carrying.
All of these physical requirements should be considered essential to the position.
Salary Range
- The anticipated hiring range is $25.58 - $31.88 hourly ($53,206-$66,310 annually), commensurate with education and experience.
