Lab Technician, Department of Genome Sciences

The Department of Genome Sciences at the University of Virginia School of Medicine seeks a Lab Technician to work in the lab of Dr. Kexin Xu. The lab is focusing on functions of epigenetic programs in cancers. The incumbent’s main duty will be to assist in the maintenance and operation of the lab. The successful candidate will be highly motivated and well-organized to help the PI maintain and manage the operations of the lab and perform some basic research projects.
Responsibilities
- Place orders and track the order statuses, ensuring that all the reagents, kits, and consumables will be sufficiently supplied upon the requests; research the best prices, deals, or sales for lab supplies that are routinely used; solve any order-related issues
- Update the inventories of all lab reagents, including chemicals, antibodies, enzymes and kits in a timely manner
- Help PI with meeting setup, schedule rearrangement, inspection schedules, safety rules follow-up, etc.
- Assist in animal work under postdocs’ or PI’s instructions, which includes performing genotyping PCR, recording animal mating/breeding information, and tagging animal ears, etc
- Make common buffers, protein/DNA gels and agar plates for the whole lab
- Be responsible for glassware washes, autoclave, cleaning and maintenance of all lab equipment
- Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
- Education: Associate's degree required; may accept equivalent combination of experience, education, certification in lieu of degree
- Experience: 2+ years of lab experience which may include student experience
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in biology
- Prior experience with animal studies
Physical Demands
This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.
The anticipated hiring range is $40,000-$50,000, commensurate with education and experience.

This is a restricted position, which is dependent on funding and is contingent upon funding availability.
This position is based in Charlottesville, VA, and must be performed fully on-site.
