The University of Virginia (UVA) Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) seeks a Post-Award Accountant to join their team, reporting to the Assistant Director of OSP Post-Award. This position is eligible for remote and/or hybrid work.

The Post-Award Accountant monitors, reconciles, and analyzes expenditures on sponsored awards to ensure compliance with award terms and conditions, prepares invoices and financial reports for sponsors, and assists in providing supporting documentation for financial audits.

The Accountant is responsible for management of sponsored awards from award acceptance through the end of the associated research project. This position identifies payments to sponsored projects, monitors unapplied cash, resolves outstanding receivables, and provides audit support.

The Accountant prepares invoices (including letter of credit draws) and assists in the cash application process, ensuring that final expenditure and cash reconciliations are efficiently executed to support timely submission of invoices and/or reports to the sponsor, allowing awards to be closed in the financial system.

Responsibilities

  • Independently reviews sponsored award terms and conditions to support reporting, invoicing, and other specific financial requirements, and monitors associated tasks through the financial system

  • Reviews payments from sponsors, applies cash to the appropriate awards, and proactively identifies and investigates variances, troubleshooting problems by researching pertinent facts and analyzing data

  • Applies comprehensive knowledge of the industry and professional standards, as well as training received from Post-Award Leadership and external resources to understand state, federal and non-federal sponsor terms, to interpret and resolve Post-Award financial management issues and to recognize and escalate

  • Recognizes and escalates complex issues regarding non-compliance with sponsor requirements to the Senior Post-Award Accountant, or to Post-Award Management

  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's degree.

Experience: At least three years of relevant experience is required. A combination of education and relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.

Physical Demands: This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings and programs.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience: Previous experience with Grants and Contracts in higher education and/or research administration.

Licensure: Certified Research Administrator (CRA) certification or similar.

This is a restricted position and has a term limit of two (2) years, after which continued employment is contingent upon department need and availability of funding.
