The University of Virginia is seeking an Instrumentation & Controls Technician for Facilities Management's Automation Services Department. Facilities Management (FM) supports the University of Virginia's wide range of research, academic, and patient care programs. With over 1,200 employees dedicated to excellence, Facilities Management is responsible for the day-to-day operation, repair, and maintenance of UVA’s buildings, infrastructure, and grounds, in addition to managing capital construction and renovation for university-owned and leased properties.

The Service Team within FM’s Automation Services department provides responsive controls service, preventative maintenance, and customer service on building automation infrastructure across grounds. The team also responds to requests to install, commission, and maintain 24/7 temperature monitoring in lab and medical grade cold storage units (e.g. ultra-low temperature freezers, cold rooms, etc.). Additionally, the team is equipped to respond to emergency situations, ensuring the integrity and functionality of critical building automation systems.

Position Summary:

The Instrumentation & Controls Technician diagnoses, calibrates, repairs, installs, configures and modifies electronic and electro-mechanical equipment. They may perform preventive and corrective maintenance to distributed control systems. Technicians work independently or as part of team consisting of apprentices and assistants, other technicians, or contractors to install electronic devices and controls. They consult with supervisors when working on complex systems. Technicians ensure safe, comfortable, and compliant environments are maintained throughout the University. Technicians may work in high-energy and/or high-risk environments.

Responsibilities:

  • Install electronic devices and controls.

  • Perform circuit analysis as part of testing and calibrates equipment according to specified standards.

  • Order, stock, remove, and replace electronic and related equipment.

  • Conduct inspections, maintain logs, and report areas of concern that would result in system shutdown.

  • Effectively communicate with other team members in Automation Services, FM personnel, and other outside stakeholders

  • Perform equipment maintenance, as necessary.

  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned, including participation in an on-call rotation to ensure continuous support and service availability.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • Two years' experience with related electronic equipment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Technical School or AS degree

  • Familiarity with Johnson Controls or Automated Logic BAS

Compensation:

The Anticipated Hiring Range for this position is $28.00 to $32.00 per hour ($58,240 - $66,560 Annually), commensurate with experience. This is a full-time position with UVA benefits.

For this position, the selected candidate will need to complete the required background checks prior to the start date of the position.

Physical Demands:

This is primarily an active job involving the use of hand tools, testing equipment and computers. The job requires traveling to all Energy and Utilities areas of responsibility.

Position Location: The position is based in Charlottesville, VA and must be performed fully on-site.
