The Abbott Lab at the University of Virginia invites applications for a full-time Lab Specialist to perform and assist with lab management, colony management and histology. The successful candidate must be motivated and detail-oriented and possess excellent interpersonal and organizational skills and demonstrate the ability to articulate information to investigators and other research team members. Hiring level will be dependent on experience.
Our laboratory investigates how the brain integrates sensory feedback to control autonomic responses that maintain cardiorespiratory homeostasis, as well as the cross-talk between cardiorespiratory function and affective state. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals considering graduate studies or long-term research careers in neuroscience and medicine.
The successful candidate will also be expected to:
- Operate, adjust, and maintain specific scientific apparatuses and instruments. Order lab supplies and maintain inventory.
- Maintain transgenic mouse colonies, including breeding, weaning, genotyping, and record keeping.
- Perform brain histology including tissue sectioning, immunofluorescence staining, in situ hybridization, and microscopy.
- Participate in research involving surgical manipulations and pharmacological experiments in rodents.
- Record accurate information and logs of experimental data.
- Provide routine, technical, and administrative support to research projects.
- In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Education: Bachelor's degree required; may accept combination of experience, education, or certification in lieu of degree.
- Experience: 1+ year of relevant lab experience required.
- Licensure: None.
Additional skills and abilities:
- Knowledge of basic laboratory procedures and practices, preferably in a neuroscience setting.
- Experience with rodent handling and brain histology preferred.
- Ability to follow set policies and procedures.
- Ability to work accurately and independently with attention to detail.
- Ability to plan and execute tasks or experiments in a timely manner.
- Proficiency in common computing software including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel).
Physical Demands: This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other benchwork and animal procedures requiring fine finger manipulation.
This is a restricted position; continuation is dependent on funding and satisfactory performance.

Compensation: The anticipated hiring range is commensurate with education and experience.
