The Parichy lab (parichylab.org) at University of Virginia seeks a Senior Lab Technician for studies of stem cell biology, pattern formation, and regeneration using the zebrafish system. The successful applicant will participate in projects involving molecular cloning, transgenesis, CRISPR mutagenesis and gene editing, high-resolution live imaging and analyses of gene expression. The laboratory offers an unusually diverse and supportive environment with outstanding opportunities for professional growth.

The successful candidate will:

  • Assist with on-going projects as directed by the PI

  • Conduct genetic and phenotypic analyses of new mutants

  • Manipulate genetic pathways and analyze phenotypic outcomes using pharmacological and other conditional transgenic methods

  • Undertake routine methods in molecular biology for genotyping, transgene construction, etc.

  • Examine gene expression and cell distribution using methods of immunohistochemistry, mRNA in situ hybridization, live imaging of fish with transgenic reporter lines

  • Participate in routine fish husbandry and genetic stock maintenance, performed by all lab members

  • Assist with administrative tasks, shared on rotating bases among all lab members

  • Other tasks and methods contingent on project needs and candidate interests

  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree by start of employment

  • Experience: At least 1 year of relevant lab experience, preferably using vertebrates. May accept combination of experience/education/certification in lieu of degree.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Outstanding attention to detail and organizational skills; ability to manage more than one project or responsibility having different time frames

  • Curiosity, and strong desire to understand both technical and intellectual aspects of scientific enterprise

  • Personal drive, willingness to master approaches and incorporate feedback, clear desire to grow as a scientist

  • Ability to work effectively in a rigorous and fast-paced research environment, and to meet or exceed goals

  • Prior experience caring for animals

  • Evidence of teamwork, effective communication and conscientiousness towards others, and an ability to see projects through to completion

Physical Demands: The position includes benchwork (e.g., pipetting) and deskwork (e.g. computers) and physical exertion (e.g., caring for animals, moving supplies), some of which involves standing for extended periods, movement through confined spaces, and needs to accommodate movements of others, as well as extended periods in environments that may be above standard room temperature. Many procedures require fine motor skills and visual acuity (e.g., microinjection, molecular biology, in vitro fertilization).

Anticipated Hiring Range: $22.00–$24.00/hour, commensurate with education and experience.

  • This is a restricted position, which is dependent on funding and is contingent upon funding availability.

  • This position will NOT support visa sponsorship.

  • This position is based in Charlottesville, VA, and must be performed fully on-site.

  • Some work on weekends or outside standard business hours can be required depending on experiments and animal care scheduling.
