The Advanced Practice Provider Manager is a clinical expert and an administrative leader who manages Advanced Practice Provider (APP) team members within their respective role in provision of the organization, service line, and departmental missions. This role is responsible for the day-to-day operations of APPs in patient care, research, education, professionalism, and regulatory compliance. The APP Manager is accountable for human resource needs, workforce planning, development of staffing models, orientation, onboarding, professional development, employee engagement and satisfaction, budget planning, and partnership between clinical service / service line and UVA Health leadership. The APP Manager works closely with service line Chiefs and Medical Directors to assure effective and timely implementation of operational initiatives. The APP Manager partners with other UVA Health leaders to achieve common goals. Additionally, the APP Manager has direct responsibility for the APPs across the continuum, integrating the boundaries of setting or entity. The APP Manager has exemplary clinical practice and devotes time to both consistent clinical practice duties and administrative work. The time allocation for these duties will vary based on patient census and acuity, as well as administrative workload.

Administration:

  • Manages, supports and is accountable for the day to day operations and quality of output from front-line APP team

  • Incorporates benchmark data in the design and implementation of APP staffing model

  • Utilizes LEAN methodology in addressing specific service related opportunities for improvement

  • Plans, coordinates, and conducts regularly scheduled APP group meetings and professional development opportunities

  • Acts as a liaison between UVA APPs and departmental leadership and medical directors, facilitating communication and ensuring alignment with goals

  • Partners with other UVA Health leaders to ensure fiduciary obligations are met and proper fiscal management is in place with a focus on quality improvement and cost effectiveness

  • Assists with recruitment, serving as the primary hiring manager

  • Collaborates with Human Resources to monitor and evaluate turnover and recruiting issues

  • Plans, implements, and supervises administrative and operational activities for a section/department of APPs as it relates to productivities and regulatory compliance

  • Performs annual performance reviews for department/team APPs

  • Performs FPPE/OPPE

  • Ensures compliance with appropriate regulatory requirements specific to the practice areas managed

  • Constructs, implements, and evaluates APP onboarding within their designated teams

  • Conducts disciplinary performance reviews and action planning

  • Plans or delegates staff scheduling including on-call and/or PTO. Formulate scheduling guidelines.

  • Assists in developing policies and procedures pertaining to APP professional practice and development

  • Meets with other APP Managers to collaborate on common initiatives and goals related to advanced practice across UVA Health

Leadership

  • Complies with, role models, and enforces the behavioral standards for service excellence

  • Monitors the overall execution of service excellence tactics; modifies as necessary to achieve goals/outcomes

  • In collaboration with the Director of APPs, Medical Directors, other UVA Health leaders, establishes a strategic and operational plan to ensure adequate and appropriate APP staffing, facilities, and space

  • Provides leadership, direction, administrative support, coaching, and feedback to the APP staff within their group

  • Facilitates and emulates the role of the APP in solutions to and resolution of issues related to patient care delivery and to collaboration with all members of the health care team including medical staff, ancillary staff, interdisciplinary staff, patients, and their families

  • Maintains open lines of communication between APP group, Medical Directors, APP leadership, and Service Line Leadership in order to be an agent for positive change

  • Develops and leads the implementation of department and/or system goals by collaborating with key stakeholders

  • Aligns team goals with Health System initiatives

  • Demonstrates accountability for own professional practice and improvement efforts

  • Ensures leadership succession planning is in place

  • Creates an environment which is blame free, where a spirit of appreciative inquiry flourishes and thinking outside the box and taking risks is a system property

Professional

  • Works collaboratively with the Medical Director, Advanced Practice Director, and other members of the healthcare team to meet the needs of the unit and team as a whole.

  • Advocates for APPs to practice at the extent of their training and licensure; identifies and partners to remove barriers to APP practice

  • Acts as an advocate for patients, families, coworkers, and the APP profession

  • Maintains board certification, state licensure, and continuing education as outlined by hospital, state, and federal policy

  • Serve as an expert resource for APP licensure, credentialing, privileging, scope of practice, and regulatory compliance within their service area/s

Clinical

  • Provides direct patient care in specialty population, which may be in a hospital or ambulatory setting

  • Thorough and accurate documentation reflecting patient status and plan of care

  • Demonstrates competency in all procedures and skills considered essential in their area of practice

  • Demonstrates excellence in direct patient care

  • Orders, recommends, and interprets tests, treatments, and therapies within their scope of practice

  • Prescribes medications and non-pharmacologic treatment modalities, as indicated within their scope of practice

  • Provides expert consultation within practice group and with other members of the interdisciplinary team

  • Facilitates and promotes evidence based practice that supports patients in their attainment of individualized health goals

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: Master’s or Doctorate in Nursing (Nurse Practitioner, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist and Certified Nurse Midwife); Master’s or Doctorate in Science (Physician Assistant or Radiologist Assistant)

Experience: 5 years as a Nurse Practitioner, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, Certified Nurse Midwife, Radiologist Assistant or Physician Assistant

Licensure: Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia and licensed to practice as a Nurse Practitioner, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist or Certified Nurse Midwife in the Commonwealth of Virginia, or licensed to practice as a Physician Assistant in the Commonwealth of Virginia or licensed to practice as a Radiologist Assistant in the Commonwealth of Virginia. American Heart Association (AHA) Health Care Provider BLS certification. American Heart Association (AHA) Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), or Neonatal Advanced Life Support (NALS) required for selected clinical practice settings. Other certifications may be required to be obtained after hire depending on the clinical setting

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Job requires standing for prolonged periods, frequently walking/bending/stooping. Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull 20 - 50lbs. May be exposed to chemicals, blood/body fluids and infectious disease.

The starting base rate for this role is $129,323.00 annually. Individual compensation will be determined by the selected candidate's qualifications, previous work experience, and/or education.
