The University of Virginia Office of Academic Compliance (OAC) is seeking a Senior Analyst for University Assessment (Senior Analyst). The Senior Analyst provides expertise to advance the University’s mission of academic excellence and continuous improvement. With direction from the University Assessment Director, the Senior Analyst supports competency assessments for the University and works collaboratively with schools to support student learning assessments for the University’s degree and certificate programs. The Senior Analyst provides statistical, analytical, and technical support for University assessment efforts. They help design University assessments (e.g., assessment tests, student surveys, and rubric-based assessments); manage and implement assessments; and analyze and visualize results. The Senior Analyst supports the writing, editing, and presentation of assessment reports for faculty, University leadership, and external agencies. This position supports and advances degree and certificate program assessment efforts across the University. The Senior Analyst monitors national trends and developments in assessment and educational research and applies best practices. The Senior Analyst reports to the Director of the OAC.

General Duties and Responsibilities

Data Management & Analysis (40%)

  • Apply statistical and assessment principles to construct representative student samples and evaluate sampling limitations when interpreting assessment results.
  • Collect, clean, and manage academic assessment data from multiple sources (e.g., learning management systems, surveys, institutional databases).
  • Use quantitative and qualitative methods to evaluate student learning outcomes and institutional performance; collaborate with faculty members, as appropriate.
  • Analyze data and prepare findings using Excel as well as statistical software and techniques.
  • Help to ensure high quality data and survey outputs through constant review of processes and methodologies.
  • Develop dashboards, visualizations, and reports to communicate findings to academic departments, leadership, and accrediting bodies.

Assessment & Reporting (40%)

  • Support the design of assessment instruments, including rubrics, tests, and questionnaires.
  • Assist with the planning and management of assessments, ensuring data collection, analysis, and reporting processes are well designed, coordinated, and sustainable.
  • Assist with university assessment committee work – meeting preparation, presentation materials, deliberations, documentation, analysis, reporting, and follow-up – for various advisory, planning, and oversight committees.
  • Administer assessments, including communicating with appropriate faculty and students and scheduling meetings and test sessions.
  • Prepare and present detailed reports for University personnel and external agencies.

Project Management (20%)

  • Lead and coordinate assessment-related projects, ensuring professionalism, timely completion, and faculty and staff engagement.
  • Develop project timelines, track progress, and manage documentation for University assessment initiatives.
  • Facilitate workshops and training sessions for faculty and staff on assessment best practices and data literacy.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least three years of relevant experience is required.

  • Direct experience with general education assessment and an earned master’s degree in a related field is desired.

  • Experience applying statistical sampling methods (e.g., random, stratified) to construct representative samples, evaluating sampling limitations, and interpreting results in applied assessment, institutional research, or educational settings is required.

  • Experience with data analysis tools such as Excel, SPSS, R, Stata, or Python is required.

  • Experience in data visualization is required.

  • Experience conducting analyses in Excel using documented and replicable methods, including clear formulas, structured workflows, and sufficient documentation to support review and reuse by others is required.

  • Experience with survey development and the use of survey programs such as Qualtrics (preferred office tool), SurveyMonkey, or related tool is required. Experience in qualitative thematic analysis is desired.

  • Experience learning and adapting to new data systems, software, and assessment tools in support of evolving institutional needs is preferred.

  • Excellent interpersonal, project management, and communication skills required.

About the Position

The salary range is $70,000-85,000 commensurate with education and experience. This position does not sponsor applicants for work visas. The University conducts background checks on all new hires before employment. This is a hybrid position, with office presence in Charlottesville, VA required on specific days (currently Tuesday through Thursday) and the option to work remotely up to two days (currently Monday and Friday). This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
