The Department of Sociology at the University of Virginia (UVA) seeks applications for a Managing Director of the National Marriage Project (NMP) to direct NMP operations. The Managing Director role combines academic leadership, teaching, student mentorship, and development work to advance the understanding and strengthening of marriage and relationships in America. This position offers a rare opportunity to shape national conversations about marriage while also engaging the undergraduate students at the University of Virginia. The Managing Director will report to the Director of National Marriage Project.
Responsibilities:
- Teach one undergraduate course per year on marriage, relationships, and family life (in consultation with Sociology Dept. Chair)
- Manage day-to-day operations of the Project
- Supervise research projects and manage center staff and programming
- Advise and coordinate student engagement activities
- Plan and manage events
- Cultivate donor relationships and raise funds to sustain and expand NMP's mission
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Master’s degree in social science, public policy, law, or counseling
Experience: 2+ years of relevant professional experience
Preferred Qualifications
- PhD in social science, public policy, law, or counseling
- Capacity to be an excellent teacher
- Experience managing an academic program or nonprofit organization
- Capacity to fundraise
- Commitment to NMP's mission of strengthening marriage culture
- Excellent communication skills
Physical Demands
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
The anticipated hiring range is $60,000–$80,000, commensurate with education and experience.

This is a restricted position, which is dependent on funding and is contingent upon funding availability.
This position is based in Charlottesville, VA, and must be performed fully on-site.
