Pharmacy Technician 2 Specialty Pharmacy Operations

Play a vital role in advancing how specialty medications reach patients by supporting a highly coordinated, hospital-affiliated pharmacy operation. This position sits at the center of a fast-moving system that prioritizes accuracy, efficiency, and innovation behind the scenes—ensuring that every prescription supports optimal patient outcomes without the pressures of direct retail interaction.

As a Pharmacy Technician in Specialty Pharmacy Operations, you’ll contribute to a sophisticated workflow designed to deliver high-quality pharmaceutical care through centralized operations while building advanced technical and operational expertise.

The Role

In this non–customer facing role, you will work within a high-functioning specialty pharmacy operation, supporting prescription fulfillment, logistics, and inventory processes that directly impact patient care across UVA Health. The environment is structured yet dynamic, offering both independence and collaborative teamwork.

An average day blends technical precision, operational awareness, and proactive problem-solving:

  • Accurately prepare and fill specialty prescriptions within a centralized workflow

  • Support packaging and shipping logistics, ensuring timely and compliant delivery through carrier systems such as UPS and vendor networks

  • Manage and maintain inventory levels, including tracking, replenishment, and organization of medications and supplies

  • Participate in mail-order and central fill operations, gaining exposure beyond traditional retail pharmacy practices

  • Collaborate with pharmacists, lead technicians, and peers to ensure workflow continuity and quality assurance

  • Take ownership of assigned responsibilities, identifying process gaps and implementing solutions in real time

This role stands apart from traditional pharmacy technician positions by offering:

  • No direct retail-style customer interaction, allowing full focus on technical and operational excellence

  • A broader scope of practice across fulfillment, logistics, and systems-based workflows

  • Opportunities to take on “captain roles” such as fill or packaging leads, fostering leadership exposure and workflow ownership
