The International Health, Safety, and Security Duty Officer (IHSS DO) serves as the University’s frontline first responder, point-of-contact, and critical events monitor for student, faculty, and staff international travel. Working part-time on an “on call” rotation, the role involves being available both during and after normal business hours for health, safety, or security incidents and emergencies abroad. With a focus on the initial case intake, triage, and communications, the IHSS DO plays a critical and central part in the IHSS Team’s daily operations and ability to deliver timely responses and support 24/7. The work is fully remote, and the schedule is sporadic throughout the year, reflecting predictable periods of high travel volume and demand. The IHSS DO works closely with the IHSS Team and reports to the IHSS Manager. The job is designed ideally for an experienced international risk professional who enjoys working in the higher education context and seeks flexible engagement outside a full-time schedule. We will look to fill up to three IHSS DO positions.

Job Duties

  • Directly handles, manages, and documents the initial phone or email response to incoming requests for health or safety assistance from students, faculty, or staff travelling internationally for university-related purposes.
  • Conducts a brief intake interview, assesses immediate risk and need relative to an existing rubric, and assigns and triages requests for additional IHSS or wider university response as needed.
  • Monitors and reports on select subscription and open-source news and intelligence feeds for potential impacts on university travelers.
  • Provides operational support during critical events, helping to maintain tempo and ensure timely communication and decision-making. Participates in after-action team reviews following critical incidents, as appropriate.
  • May manage individual incidents in close collaboration with the IHSS Team, Crisis Management Team, Insurance, and Global Assistance Provider. May conduct welfare checks to account for travelers during critical events.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma required. MA or BA-plus-experience with an international, comparative, or global focus preferred.
  • At least 1 year of direct experience with international risk assessment, mitigation, and/or crisis response (health, mental health, misconduct).
  • At least 3 years of experience working with students, faculty, or similarly entrepreneurial travelers.
  • Exceptional analytic and communication skills, including listening skills. Demonstrated ability to prioritize and perform tasks with accuracy and efficiency and an ability to work independently.
  • Patience, flexibility, humility, and comfort with ambiguity. Ability to remain calm in crisis situations, exercise sound judgment, and handle sensitive and confidential matters with discretion.
  • Demonstrated ability to form trusting relationships, to communicate effectively and persuasively with all kinds of people and as part of a team, and to communicate a service-oriented and collaborative approach.
  • Direct experience living and working in other languages, cultures, or countries a plus.
  • This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers.
