Research Associate in Chemistry
Charlottesville, VA, USA
USD 63,500-64,400 / year
The Department of Chemistry at the University of Virginia invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work in the laboratory of Prof. Michelle Personick. The Personick Group conducts research at the interface of inorganic materials chemistry, heterogeneous catalysis, and fundamental surface science to design tailored metal nanomaterials that function as improved catalysts for energy- and resource-efficient chemical transformations.
The Personick Group has developed an integrated electrochemical approach to nanomaterials synthesis that combines real-time, in situ electrochemical measurements with electrochemically-driven nanoparticle growth (electrodeposition). The postdoc will work on projects involving the use of electrochemistry to (1) design new syntheses for shape- and composition-controlled metal nanoparticles and (2) probe nanoparticle growth mechanisms.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Candidates must have a Ph.D. (awarded or imminent) in Chemistry or a related field. Experience in electrochemistry and nanomaterials synthesis are required.
Preferred qualifications:
- Expertise in electrodeposition, electroanalytical chemistry, and in situ measurements to understand nanoparticle growth mechanisms
- Strong ability in experimental design, data analysis, and data management
- Experience with mentoring students
- Demonstrated record of publishing research relevant to the position in high-quality peer-reviewed research journals
- Ability to communicate effectively in written and verbal formats
- Proficiency in working independently and as a member of a collaborative team
APPLICATION PROCEDURE: Apply online at https://jobs.virginia.edu/us and search for R0084851. Attach a cover letter indicating your research interests in the Personick Lab, a detailed curriculum vitae, and the contact information for three individuals who can provide professional reference letters.
APPLICATION DEADLINE: Review of applications will begin on July 12, 2026. The anticipated start date for this position is August 1, 2026. The University will perform background checks on all new hires prior to employment.
The anticipated hiring range is $63,500–$64,400, commensurate with experience.
This is a one-year appointment; however, the appointment may be renewed for additional one-year increments, contingent upon available funding and satisfactory performance.
