About the Role
The Position
Our global investment platform is comprised of over 700 investment professionals across six investment functions (Boutiques, Hedge Funds, Privates, Research, Risk & Science, Strategy, and Trading) in eight locations (Boston, Hong Kong, London, New York, Radnor, San Francisco, Singapore, and Tokyo).
Within the investment platform, we are seeking a Business Manager to partner with the APAC Leadership Team (APAC LT) and leaders individually on their investment platform responsibilities. The Business Manager will be a member of the Investment Platform COO Function residing at the intersection of the investment functions. The group is building shared ‘Centers of Excellence’ to benefit all investment groups and ensure the platform is flexible and adaptable to changing client needs and market conditions. Located in Singapore, the Business Manager will report to the Dir, IP Business Intelligence.
Essential Skills
The following essential skills are required for the role:
Project management expertise with strategic orientation– The Business Manager will be responsible for project management of investment oriented initiatives, serving as a change agent, rallying support for large-scale initiatives, and thinking creatively about new ways to amplify the success of our investment platform professionals. Ability to successfully manage and complete projects, time management, efficiency orientation and ability to iterate and pivot during execution will be critical.
Strategic mindset – the Business Manager will be responsible for critical thinking through evolution in market structure and practice, client demand, industry changes with a view to positioning the firm for continued success. Analytical thinking, sourcing and incorporating feedback and building business judgement will be important skill in ensuring strategic alignment.
Analytical approach to problem solving – The Business Manager will play a crucial role in providing the tools and framework needed to assess investment skill. The ability to creatively develop new methods to analyze and understand the drivers of investment performance is essential. The ideal candidate will exhibit strong attention to detail, with the ability to quickly spot and diagnose errors in work done by others, evaluating the skill and impact of our investors through data and analytics.
Superior collaboration and influencing skills – The successful candidate will enjoy contributing to a highly collaborative environment. The Business Manager will build strong trusting relationships internally with colleagues across not only the investment platform, but also with business managers cross other platforms, business partners in IT, Product Management, Human Resources, and Finance. The ability to provide a point of view and challenge the status quo is critical, as is the humility to admit mistakes and a desire to learn from others; they must recognize the benefits of diverse perspectives. The ability to clearly communicate (both verbally and in writing), integrate numerous viewpoints, and mobilize/influence across all levels of the organization is critical.
Ability to work with data – the business manager should be adapt at sourcing, utilizing datasets and technology to increase efficiency and effectiveness of managing the investment platform in the region.
Growth mindset – The flexibility and openness to continue learning, evolving and growing as a business strategist. The ideal candidate will have a global perspective and creative approach for thinking about innovation and the evolution of investment research within the broader asset management industry.
Responsibilities
Areas of responsibility will include but are not limited to:
Drive forward the strategic agenda and operational needs within the APAC Leadership Team, keeping the team focused and organized around the most important initiatives;
Provide tactical support to the APAC Leadership Team, including project management support, managing certain processes and regular meetings;
Understand and interpret investment performance-based analytics that are shared with the APAC Leadership Team to support line management’s understanding of investment performance;
Perform various analyses to assist with complex strategic, transformational and growth initiatives;
Leverage a deep understanding of the investment process in order to marshal the right resources to allow our investors to exceed the performance expectations of our clients most efficiently and effectively;
Play a leadership role in the continued globalization of the Investment Platform, specifically with respect to systems, collaboration and reporting;
Ensure the APAC Investment Platform has the necessary infrastructure and support to achieve its investment objectives and meet our fiduciary and regulatory responsibilities;
Proactively improve processes and data flow across the region and platform; and
Assist with the year-end performance evaluation and peer review process.
Other Qualifications
Additional qualifications and characteristics include:
7+ years of relevant professional experience, ideally in an investment-adjacent or business management role
Superior organizational skills with a results orientation. The ability to manage, prioritize and complete multiple projects simultaneously is necessary;
Credibility to engage productively with senior investors and leaders, including ability to constructively challenge status quo and solve problems;
A strong understanding of the global capital markets and a keen interest in understanding the investment process and performance analysis;
Ability to navigate stressful situations with poise; focused on being a calming presence, active listener and pragmatic problem solver;
Passion for investments and markets
Entrepreneurial mindset
Excellent business writing and Excel skills are required; and
Strong academic credentials; MBA and/or CFA (or equivalent) is preferred.
