About this role:

Wells Fargo is seeking a dynamic and experienced leader to manage our Middleware Engineering team. This role is responsible for the team that architects, builds, secures, and operates our enterprise messaging and streaming platforms, including IBM MQ, Apache Kafka, Tibco, and Solace. You will lead a team of subject matter experts, setting the strategic direction for our critical data-in-motion infrastructure that supports high-volume, low-latency financial applications. This is a leadership role for a manager who combines deep technical knowledge with a passion for developing engineers and delivering highly reliable platform services.


In this role, you will:

Team Leadership & Strategy

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of middleware engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Set the strategic roadmap for the messaging and streaming platforms, aligning with business objectives, technology modernization, and cloud initiatives.
  • Manage team resources, including hiring, performance management, career development, and project allocation.
  • Oversee the team's operational duties, including on-call rotations, incident management, and service-level agreement (SLA) reporting.

Architecture & Service Delivery

  • Oversee the architecture and engineering of enterprise-grade middleware infrastructure, including IBM MQ, Apache Kafka, Tibco, and Solace, ensuring designs are scalable, resilient, and secure.
  • Govern the standards and best practices for MQ definitions, Kafka topic design, partitioning strategies, and data schemas (Avro/Protobuf).
  • Ensure the delivery of robust solutions for high-availability (HA) and disaster recovery (DR), including MQ clustering, Kafka replication, and other platform-specific features.
  • Drive the platform's automation strategy, overseeing the development and maintenance of frameworks (Ansible, Python, Terraform) to improve efficiency and reduce manual effort.

Platform Management & Operations

  • Manage the overall health, performance, and capacity of all middleware environments.
  • Lead the team during high-priority production incidents, ensuring effective root cause analysis (RCA) and timely resolution.
  • Direct platform security initiatives, ensuring the implementation of advanced controls like TLS/SSL, CHLAUTH, OAM, and SASL/ACLs to meet compliance and audit requirements.
  • Manage vendor relationships and platform licensing for all messaging and streaming technologies.

Stakeholder & Developer Collaboration

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for business and application stakeholders regarding all middleware services.
  • Champion the adoption of event-driven architectures and streaming best practices across the organization.
  • Foster strong partnerships with application development teams, ensuring they receive the support and guidance needed to effectively integrate with the firm's middleware platforms.


Required Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of Technology Strategic Leadership experience, or equivalent demonstrated through one or a combination of the following: work experience, training, military experience, education
  • 4+ years of management or leadership experience


Desired Qualifications:

  • experience in a management or team leadership role overseeing a technical infrastructure or software engineering team.
  • cumulative hands-on experience with enterprise messaging/streaming platforms, demonstrating a strong technical foundation in several of the following: IBM MQ, Apache Kafka, Tibco, Solace, or similar enterprise middleware products.
  • Leadership & Strategy: Proven ability to develop technical strategy, manage engineering teams, and deliver complex projects.
  • IBM MQ Knowledge: Strong understanding of MQ architecture, security (OAM, CHLAUTH), and operational best practices.
  • Kafka Knowledge: Strong understanding of the Kafka ecosystem (Brokers, Connect, Schema Registry), security models, and performance tuning concepts.
  • Automation Mindset: Experience driving automation initiatives using tools like Ansible, Python, or Terraform.
  • Operational Excellence: Experience managing operations for critical production systems, including incident and problem management.
  • High-Volume Environments: Experience in financial services or another industry with high-throughput and strict reliability requirements.
  • A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science/Engineering or equivalent professional experience.
  • A strong leader who can inspire and develop technical talent.
  • A strategic thinker who can connect technical decisions to business value.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage with both technical staff and senior leadership.
  • Maintains calm and decisive leadership during critical production incidents.

Pay Range

Reflected is the base pay range offered for this position. Pay may vary depending on factors including but not limited to achievements, skills, experience, or work location. The range listed is just one component of the compensation package offered to candidates.

$215,000.00 - $355,000.00
