About this role:

Wells Fargo is seeking an Engineering Associate – Java Application & Microservices Development to join our Core Banking group within Consumer Technology (CT). Core Banking Technology plays a critical role in Consumer Lending and the broader CT organization by building modern, scalable, and secure solutions that power the everyday banking experiences of millions of customers. Our mission is to enhance user experiences, improve operational efficiency, and reduce risk across Wells Fargo’s core banking platforms.

In this role, you will work under the guidance of senior engineers to design, build, test, and support Java‑based backend services, REST APIs, and microservices used throughout Core Banking applications. You will strengthen foundational skills in Java, Spring Boot, and database development, sharpen analytical problem‑solving abilities, and grow your ability to code independently. You will also gain exposure to event‑driven architecture concepts (Kafka/MQ), leverage AI‑assisted development tools like GitHub Copilot, and have opportunities to work with UI frameworks such as Angular or React. This role is ideal for early‑career developers who enjoy learning, taking on challenges, and building real, production‑grade solutions that support critical banking workflows.

You will also participate in the Career Opportunities in Development and Engineering (CODE) Program — a two‑year development program that runs alongside your full-time experience. CODE is designed for recent grads, coding bootcamp alumni and individuals with hands-on technical experience looking to break into tech. No four‑year degree is required.

CODE provides:

  • Immersive onboarding and foundational technical training

  • A supportive cohort experience of peers starting their tech careers

  • Dedicated mentors and program managers who guide your development

  • Professional development, career coaching, and workshops

Wells Fargo only considers candidates who are presently authorized to work for any employer in the United States and who do not require work visa sponsorship now or in the future in order to retain their authorization to work in the United States.

In this role, you will:

  • Design, code, test, debug, and document backend features and microservices using Java and Spring Boot

  • Build and consume RESTful APIs that support core banking services and transaction workflows

  • Strengthen database experience by writing SQL queries, troubleshooting data flows, and supporting application logic

  • Apply analytical thinking to solve technical challenges and break down stories into clear coding tasks

  • Use AI‑assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot to enhance productivity and explore solution alternatives

  • Partner with senior engineers and cross‑functional teams to deliver high‑quality features in an Agile environment

  • Learn and apply event‑driven architecture concepts (e.g., Kafka, MQ) and how they support distributed systems

  • Contribute to UI tasks using Angular or React when opportunities arise

  • Participate in Agile ceremonies including standups, sprint planning, retrospectives, and code reviews

  • Learn cloud‑aligned development concepts as Core Banking applications evolve within Consumer Technology’s modernization strategy

Required Qualifications:

6+ months of Technology Engineering and Solutions experience, or equivalent demonstrated through one or a combination of the following: work experience, training, military experience, education

Desired Qualifications:

  • 6+ months of experience building small applications or tools (100–300 lines of code) in Java, .NET, Spring Boot, or Angular, demonstrated through academic projects, internships, personal projects, or early full‑time roles.

  • Experience using AI‑assisted engineering tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot) or building small AI prototypes such as chatbots or automated scripts.

  • Experience working with SQL or NoSQL databases, including writing basic queries

  • Ability to code independently, demonstrated through personal projects, labs, or portfolio work.

  • Experience building or consuming RESTful APIs and understanding HTTP fundamentals.

  • Exposure to AI‑assisted development tools (GitHub Copilot) or building small prototypes.

  • Exposure to UI frameworks such as Angular or React.

  • Familiarity with event‑driven architecture concepts (Kafka, MQ) and interest in learning them on the job.

  • Understanding of computer science fundamentals such as data structures, algorithms, and OOP.

  • Exposure to Linux/UNIX environments (basic commands, log review).

  • Experience participating in Agile‑style group projects, including sprints, standups, or using task boards like Jira or Trello.

  • Strong communication skills, attention to detail, and willingness to learn in a fast‑paced environment.

  • Strong attention to detail when working with internal user workflows, data accuracy, and servicing system logic.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools such as Excel and Word, managing email and calendars in Outlook, and building presentations in PowerPoint.

  • Experience communicating technical issues or access-related concerns across technical and non-technical teams.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and meet deadlines in academic or professional settings.

  • Bachelor’s in computer science or related field preferred but not required.

  • Exposure to financial services, financial technology (fintech), or banking environments
