Bring your problem-solving mindset, entrepreneurial spirit, and established expertise to the Houston, Texas office of Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc. (WJE).

Our local team of architectural, structural, materials, and mechanical engineers is seeking a licensed Structural Engineer with significant experience solving challenging problems in the oil & gas industry (upstream, midstream, or downstream). This is a rare opportunity to be an integral part of our growing, multidisciplinary civil infrastructure and asset integrity practice, while mutually benefiting as an employee-owner.

With an in-depth knowledge of structural challenges and damage mechanisms, industry-specific design codes and standards, and safety-critical fitness-for-service evaluations and repair approaches, you will support our established clients while also pursuing clients and projects from your existing professional network.

As an employee-owner at WJE, you will have the day-to-day autonomy and flexibility to direct this next chapter of your career, combined with the resources and support of working for a well-established organization: stability and benefits, administrative project support, a collaborative environment, the company’s collective interdisciplinary knowledge, and state-of-the-art laboratory and testing capabilities.

Responsibilities:

  • Technical project execution for the day-to-day success of multiple concurrent projects, including:

    • Acting as the primary point of contact for clients, contractors, and project teams

    • Leveraging a principles-first approach to develop practical solutions for challenging engineering problems in combination with a deep understanding of codes, standards, and historical industry practices

    • Self-performing and advising others in complex analysis, repair design, hands-on fieldwork, and preparation of technically excellent client deliverables (e.g., written reports, presentations, construction details, and specifications)

    • Providing high-quality technical reviews of work completed by others

    • Sealing project documents as the Engineer of Record, as appropriate

  • Project management, including client development; project initiation, scoping, and assembling appropriate project teams; and managing internal and external client expectations, deliverables, and financials

  • Contributions to practice development and company-wide objectives, including providing technical consultation to interdisciplinary project teams; fostering new and existing client relationships; collaborating with other WJE practice leaders for in-house knowledge-sharing and training initiatives; and engaging in meaningful involvement in industry-related professional organizations, conferences, and technical committees

  • Mentorship, including exemplifying WJE’s culture of shared destiny and knowledge sharing to better the team around you: locally and company-wide, formally and informally, on-and-off projects, for technical topics and overall career development

Qualifications:

  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE); SE licensure a plus

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in civil/structural engineering or related field; master’s degree or PhD preferred

  • Minimum ten years of relevant industry experience within petrochemical, refining, upstream, midstream, or downstream with demonstrated expertise in structural assessment, repair, and strengthening. The minimum years of experience may be flexible for candidates who can clearly demonstrate that they are already performing at or above the level of responsibility expected for this position.

  • Dedicated self-starter, motivated to contribute to the growth of an expanding consulting practice based on a "principles first" problem-solving approach

  • Excellent technical, graphical, written, and verbal communication skills
