Engineer II – Energy & Control (Hydro Generation)

Position Overview

We are seeking two Engineer II professionals to support a portfolio of hydroelectric generation projects across approximately 25 facilities in Wisconsin and Minnesota. These positions are open due to internal reorganization and will play a key role in executing capital and maintenance projects across multiple hydro plants.

Engineers will manage approximately 10 projects per year and coordinate efforts from project initiation through closeout, working closely with hydro plant management, contractors, and regulatory agencies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop bid packages and detailed design specifications
  • Coordinate and manage projects from initiation through completion
  • Collaborate with hydro plant operations and management teams
  • Oversee contractor activities and ensure project alignment with scope and safety requirements
  • Support regulatory compliance efforts with agencies such as:
    • Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC)
    • Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR)
    • Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA)
  • Participate in seasonal site visits (construction in summer/fall; design/closeout in winter/spring)
  • Ensure adherence to power plant safety protocols and PPE requirements
Work Environment

  • Collaborative engineering team (currently 4 engineers; expanding to 6)
  • No direct reports; strong contractor coordination responsibilities
  • Primarily office-based with site travel
  • Limited remote flexibility (~1 day/week, primarily winter months)
  • Standard 40-hour work week (typical schedule: 7:00–3:30 or 7:30–4:00)
  • Limited overtime during outage and peak construction season

Travel & Expenses

  • 20–30% travel to hydro facilities (primarily WI, one MN site)
  • Mileage reimbursement provided
  • Company vehicle possible if exceeding 1,200 miles/month
  • Per diem for extended site assignments (meals + mileage)

Safety Requirements

  • Standard PPE and safety training required
  • Work may include heights, ladder use, and industrial plant environments
  • Role classified as high-risk due to power generation environment

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical Controls, or Civil/Structural) from an ABET-accredited university
  • Minimum 2 years of engineering experience
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Strong communication skills and accountability
  • Ability to work independently
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office

Preferred Qualifications

  • FE/EIT certification
  • PE license (strongly preferred)
  • PMP certification or formal project management experience
  • Experience in hydroelectric or industrial environments
  • Familiarity with:
    • SAP (work management systems)
    • Primavera P6 or MS Project
    • Bluebeam
Interview Process

Pay Rate Range

39 - 52 USD hourly
