About the role

The purpose of Corporate Affairs is to build and help others to build the reputations that National Grid needs to succeed in the short and long term. Group Public Affairs and Policy is responsible for building National Grid’s reputation and influencing key stakeholders externally including parliamentarians, government, lobbying groups, think tanks, trade associations, academics and EU stakeholders. The team is also responsible for horizon scanning, issues management, policy development for the transmission network, taking ownership for lines to take/key messages.

Key Accountabilities

  • Lead on UK policy strategy, prioritisation, research and development, collaborating with colleagues across the business.
  • Collaborate on global policy development, working with US colleagues.
  • Co-lead policy governance at both a UK and Group level, tracking policy progress and outcomes.
  • Anticipate, identify and analyse strategic policy issues and trends, working closely with subject matter experts to determine business impact.
  • Provide policy advice and insight to senior leaders, including through input to executive and Board briefings.
  • Track and develop responses to Government consultations, legislation and Parliamentary inquiries.
  • Develop and shape policy messages in line with overall company narrative, including through external policy papers and reports.

Knowledge, Experience and Technical Know How

  • Broad knowledge of UK energy policy and the related stakeholder landscape, and a demonstrable interest in the wider public policy and political environment.
  • Strategic thinker with a proven experience of successful policy analysis, development and campaigning at a senior level within a multi-stakeholder environment.
  • Strong track record of successfully communicating complex policy solutions to multiple audiences, including through high-quality written communications.
  • Proven track record of building and maintaining an extensive external stakeholder network.
  • In-depth experience of successfully working and influencing internal stakeholders in a large complex organisation.
  • Able to prioritise and manage competing issues, maintaining high and consistent standards, working at pace and with minimal guidance.

What's you'll get

A competitive salary circa £80,000 – £92,000 – dependent on capability and location


As well as your base salary, you will receive a company car or allowance, a bonus of up to 20% of your salary for stretch performance and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%. You will also have access to a number of flexible benefits such as a share incentive plan, a salary sacrifice technology scheme, support via the employee assistance line and matched charity giving to name a few.
