National Grid is hiring a Lead Designer, Electrical Planning and Design for Massachusetts. This is a Hybrid Role - Must live within a commutable distance to one of our locations.
Job Purpose
National Grid is seeking a Lead Designer within its Substation Engineering & Design Department. The designer will work within a project team alongside the Civil/Structural engineer to develop civil and structural designs for substation projects. These projects include replacements/retrofits and upgrades to existing substations as well as new substations.
Key Accountabilities
- With minimal oversight provide project, field, and real time design and drafting for all civil/structural aspects of substation design and construction. Will work on minor equipment replacements and retrofits, complicated rebuilds and new substations, and everything in between.
- Collaborate with cross functional / multi-discipline teams: Civil/Structural & Electrical engineers and designers, as well as Construction, Environmental, Permitting, Operations, Security, Project Management, Estimating, Real Estate, and Legal departments to ensure successful project completion.
- Create detailed civil/structural designs and drawings for foundations as well as steel and aluminum substation structures. Must be familiar with all applicable building and industry codes and standards (ASCE 113, ASCE 7, ACI, AISC, ADM, NESC, IBC, State Building Codes, etc.).
- Conduct field inspections, determine cost effective solutions, and develop comprehensive design reports based on applicable design codes, engineering procedures, and sound safety practices.
- Oversee and review consultants' work under a master service agreement, ensuring compliance and technical adequacy.
- Ability to prioritize work and be a team member on multiple projects at one time with varying constraints and requirements.
Qualifications
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Civil/Structural Engineering or Civil/Structural Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited university or college.
- Proficient with Bentley Microstation.
- Familiar with AutoDesk AutoCAD.
- Knowledge of various structural and foundation systems required. Knowledge of various material types such as steel, aluminum, and reinforced concrete is required.
- Knowledge of oil containment systems and flood resilient design is preferred.
- General knowledge of civil site design, stormwater design, and Federal/State/local permitting is preferred.
- General knowledge of the following is desired but not required: Substation equipment including transformers, circuit breakers, switches, reclosers, metal clad switchgear, control houses, etc.
- Substation construction and maintenance techniques, electric utility operation practices, including distribution system.
- Must have a good working knowledge of typical construction and utility industry codes and standards.
- Reviews accuracy of own work/designs and checks that all details are completed as intended.
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, oral and written communication skills.
- Strong problem solving and analytical skills.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects.
- Ability to physically navigate in and around an electrical substation.
- Valid driver's license required with acceptable driving record that meets National Grid’s Safe Driver Policy.
- Willingness to work storm duty function during storm events such as damage appraisal, restoration crew supervision, storm room, etc.

Salary - $124,000 - $146,000
