Job Purpose

Drives the planning and execution of NY Gas Strategic Workforce Planning focused on developing plans across NY Gas Operations that support the changing NY Gas landscape. Partner with NY Gas Operations teams to support the planning, development, and consolidation of workforce plans across a 10-year horizon that will be updated annually. Includes workforce forecasting, tracking, and reporting using quantitative methods to support recruiting, work planning, budgeting, and associated variance analyses.
Strategic Workforce Planning - The process that enables National Grid to define the right shape, size, skills, location, and costs for our workforce – specifically critical roles – over 3-, 5- and 10-year periods, in line with our strategic ambitions, regulatory commitments, and business plan. It informs annual Group Function and Business Unit investments required in recruitment, training, and talent development to address future capability and capacity needs.

Works with Workforce Analytics & Planning Team from the People Team to roll out and utilize the Strategic Workforce Planning tool recently introduced (Orgvue) and feed into the broader National Grid Strategic Workforce Planning initiative.

Key Accountabilities

  • Responsible for updating and strengthening annually the existing Strategic Workforce Plan for the NY Gas business by OpCo and Department with a focus on critical roles required over a 3-, 5- and 10-year periods, in line with our strategic ambitions, regulatory commitments, and business plan.
  • Act as liaison with NY Gas Strategic Planning team to align operating model and long-term outlook scenarios (i.e., Customer Affordability vs Full Electrification scenario analysis)
  • Collaborate with operations team on hiring plans including levels of attrition and required timing to technical competence by individual roles, responsibilities, and operator qualifications requirements.
  • Initially work within a De-Centralized model utilizing support from individual Subject Matter Experts (SME’s) within operational teams
  • Align with \ inform Workforce Development initiatives that will broaden candidate pool and long term planning needs in a changing gas business environment.
  • Interface with the training and recruiting teams to identify recruiting and training needs.
  • Analyze attrition rates and trends by roles, organization, geography, time to technical competence, and salary differential to help identify root causes. Utilize data to support strategic workforce planning. Identify, track, and manage hiring volumes to achieve required level of operational FTEs needed on property and associated support and leadership to deliver the work.
  • Develop probabilistic hiring forecasts using quantitative methods to identify resourcing needs across the longer term 10 year horizon, with focus on shorter term 3 & 5 year periods.
  • Embed External and internal factors shaping our workforce requirements.
  • Partner with Finance team to ensure that budget assumptions to align with workforce planning.
  • Drive continued step-change to improve strategic element of work force planning aligned with financial budgets and regulatory requirements.
  • Inform annual Group Function and Business Unit investments required in recruitment, training, and talent development to address future capability and capacity needs.
  • Implement Orgvue Strategic Workforce Planning system into NY Gas Work planning process.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required preferably in math (master’s or advanced degree is a plus).
  • Strong analytical/statistical background, technical acumen with ability to gather & analyze data identifying trends, providing forecasting, statistical analysis, variance analysis, predictive modelling.
  • Operational understanding mixed with leadership experience, including work force planning.
  • Project management experience working with multiple stakeholders in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Proficient in MS Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, Word, including document control. Also, PowerBi and SAP or specific key business tools
  • Understanding of current trends within the gas utility industry, especially related to energy transition matters, regulation, and policy.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across multiple disciplines or functional groups as well as across multiple levels of management.

Salary

$105,000 - $123,000 a year

This position has a career path which provides for advancement opportunities within and across bands as you develop and evolve in the position; gaining experience, expertise and acquiring and applying technical skills. Internal candidates will be assessed and provided offers against the minimum qualifications of this role and their individual experience.
