About the role
Provide the highest level of Safety Health and Environmental management including system safety specialism to the Optel team. Lead on statutory compliance within the zone against all internal and external policy and procedures relating to Safety, Health, Security and Environmental.
What you'll be doing
- Lead the Optel team on all Safety, Health, Security and Environmental issues using an elevated level of SHES knowledge.
- Create a positive safety culture in the team by communicating, embedding, and ensuring SHES procedural compliance and consistency within the zonal team.
- Lead role in ensuring statutory compliance across the department including Project delivery, Procurement events, Settlement Metering BSC, Optel Managed Service and Fibre agreements, Commercial Order requests.
- Lead role managing all internal, external & government interfaces around Local Resilience on behalf of the team. This includes test and exercise planning and cross utility working.
- Lead interface with AO Operational Compliance team to ensure, all working parties are represented; changes to procedures cascaded; staff informed of changes; and changes are implemented. Provide input into SHES procedures and safety rules development and revision.
- Lead and monitor the Safety and Environmental Incident Investigations process ensuring investigations are carried out in a timely manner; acceptable investigations; appropriate actions; and sharing of learning. Undertake significant IMS investigations as required.
- Undertake SAP audits as required by the SAP audit plan as per AMBP120.
- Lead on the delivery of AMBP120 audits, ensuring volumes are achieved; actions are completed, trends analysed; and learning is shared.
- Lead on advice, guidance, and interpretation of SHES procedures and safety rules to staff in the team.
- Lead on national and local safety improvement initiatives.
- Carry out authorisation interviews for PL, AP, additional safety rules authorisations and independent SAP final interviews with the Optel & Metering Manager as required as per NSI 30. Hold Point 1 interviews as required to support the management team. (the intent is not to carry out every HP1 as the role is to support trainees).
- Monitor and mentor trainee SAPs to ensure the standard is acceptable for progression to Hold Point 1 and final interview.
- Accountable for reporting and tracking SHES team actions to the management team, ensuring timely closure e.g. IMS, Safety Risk and Compliance audit actions.
- Interface and support the Academy on safety related training including setting the standards; representing the team; identifying improvements; and providing feedback.
What you'll need
- Knowledge and understanding of the technical issues involved in working on LV systems, telecoms, and metering
- Previously authorised as an SAP
- Knowledge and understanding of National Grids statutory compliance documents affecting its operations.
- Expert knowledge of NG Safety Rules, National Safety Instructions and Working Procedures.
- Extensive knowledge of statutory legislation relating to SHE issues.
- Able to interrogate performance data and drive continuous improvement.
- Effective people management and communication skills.
- Undertake people management in a delivery environment across a full range of staff.
Qualification
- Minimum HNC or equivalent in a STEM discipline preferably electrical engineering
- Experience in leading a dispersed multi-disciplined team.
- Previously authorised as an SAP
- NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent.
- Driving license.
