About the role

To help drive efficiency in the green energy transition

As owners of Wales and England’s electricity transmission network, we take green energy seriously. Between now and 2026 we’re investing £29 billion into the decarbonisation of energy systems. Would you like to be involved in this vital transition?

If you’re a Quantity Surveyor who wants more responsibility and the chance to work on high-value, complex schemes, we’d like to hear from you.

This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in the UK’s transition to clean energy within Strategic Infrastructure team as a Quantity Surveyor, where you support the development and delivery of very large and complex infrastructure projects safely, on time and within budget by providing contract and commercial guidance to the project teams.

Our customers include everyone who uses electricity in England and Wales. Acting on behalf of these people, you’ll help ensure that we deliver our projects in the most commercially effective way.

Within this role, you will be based 3 days a week from Waltham Abbey, Essex therefore being a commutable distance is key.

You’ll be welcomed into our diverse, inclusive organisation that has recently won an Institution of Engineering and Technology silver award for our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion programme.

About You

This is an experienced Quantity Surveyor role and you would be leading on your own packages of work as part of a large scale project.

  • You will have experience of delivering several projects already and be able to demonstrate experience of contract and commercial management, stakeholder engagement, risk management, and procurement.
  • Ideally you will have a degree in quantity surveying or a related discipline such as construction management or construction law and a couple of years experience of working as a QS or over 5 years experience of working as a QS on construction projects and an understanding of NEC4 contracts (Option A, C and E).
  • Ideally you have experience on infrastructure projects, but this isn’t essential as you might have a contractor or consultant background, for example.
  • You also have a driving licence that permits you to drive in the UK.
  • There is an expectation that you’ll be able to travel to site as and when required, but as part of our hybrid working model you’ll also have the flexibility to work from home, a National Grid office, or site

What you'll do

  • You’ll support procurement activities associated with the packages/sub-projects (over £100m) and with support from the Lead Quantity Surveyor act as the key commercial representative providing guidance on commercial and contract management considerations and advising on contract options and budget estimates, including risk & contingency allowances.
  • You’ll be responsible for the quality assurance of construction contracts, including maintaining accurate contractor data records, providing commercial and contract management support, guidance and coaching to the project delivery team and ensure contractor costs are robustly managed across your package.
  • You’ll ensure contract compliance through effective contract management activities including monitoring of spend against agreed budgets, KPIs and other metrics. Helping your project team develop and maintain cost forecasts will be a key responsibility.
  • You’ll produce all necessary contract forms such as valuations and payment recommendations and instructions and communications for the assigned project, leading on providing independent reviews and advice on variations and compensation events, supporting any escalation procedures and dispute avoidance and resolution processes.
  • You’ll build strong relationships with a range of stakeholders, including Project Managers, Planners, Accountants, Operational colleagues and other specialists, contractors, and colleagues in procurement, regulation and legal teams, reaching out to senior stakeholders for assistance when it is needed.

What you'll get

A competitive salary between £55,000 - £64,000 dependant on capability, alongside a £3,000 market supplement.

As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus based on personal and company performance and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%. You will also have access to a number of flexible benefits such as a share incentive plan, salary sacrifice car and technology schemes, support via employee assistance lines and matched charity giving to name a few.
