The Offshore Hybrid Asset Engineering Team is responsible for developing and constructing NGV’s new Interconnectors and offshore hybrid assets. Supporting to develop and build onshore and offshore HVDC converter stations, and cable systems. Applying high voltage, low voltage, civil, geotechnical, building services engineering disciplines to create safe, reliable assets for National Grid Ventures.
The MTDC Consultant will be responsible for ensuring the multi-terminal system designs function cohesively, in accordance with NGV’s specifications. This role encompasses oversight of primary electrical, protection and control, as well as ancillary systems design. The consultant will be involved in OHA projects spanning the development, design, testing, construction, and commissioning stages.
Additionally, the MTDC Consultant will advise the engineering team, represent National Grid Ventures during design review meetings, evaluate technical documentation, and contribute to the creation of a comprehensive and integrated design for MTDC systems.
The role is primarily office-based at the main NGV office in Warwick, with regular national and international travel for meetings, factory visits and site visits. Team members are currently permitted to work up to 6 days a fortnight from home but this is likely to reduce as projects move through the project lifecycle.Please note you must have a full UK driving licence and be able to drive for this role.
What you'll do
- Ensure that all our OHA assets are safe to operate and maintain by embedding safety by design into all civil design works.
- Ensure that all our main works contracts are correctly specified, designed and installed in accordance with legislation and NGV technical standards.
- Where NGV technical standards do not exist develop where appropriate, standards which can be used for all OHA projects.
- Act as the senior technical interface for OHA converter designs with internal and external customers, authorities, OEMs, suppliers, and contractors.
- Provide mentorship to other members of the engineering team.
- Ensure compliance with Grid Code and National Grid standards.
- Support design reviews, technical queries, and on-site works.
- Liaise with OEMs and contractors during assembly and commissioning.
What you'll need
- Chartered Engineer with extensive experience in delivering infrastructure projects, demonstrating the capability to consistently produce high-quality results within strict time constraints.
- Comprehensive understanding of UK safety legislation, ideally supported by nationally recognised qualifications such as IOSH or NEBOSH
- In-depth knowledge of the power industry.
- Advanced technical expertise regarding the principal elements comprising converter stations.
- Proficient in the design of primary equipment, including transformers, reactors, and switchgear, at converter stations.
- Experienced in the design and implementation of HVDC converter protection schemes and control systems.
- Superior written and verbal communication skills to facilitate effective internal and external interactions.
- Proven ability to encourage collaboration and maintain robust stakeholder relationships.
- Excellent organisational skills, enabling efficient management of multiple work packages and interfaces.

A competitive salary between £66,000 - £94,000 per annum– dependent on capability.
