National Grid is hiring a HVDC & FACTS System Study Engineer - This position is based from our Warwick office however we offer flexible hybrid working options.
Job Purpose
As a HVDC & FACTS System Study Engineer you’ll lead the design of the electricity transmission system, ensuring optimum system design issues on NGET’s transmission network. Working closely with suppliers, supporting compliance assessments to ensure that they can connect to the transmission network.
You’ll be involved in new technologies (HVDC and FACTS) discussions and specifications including innovation projects related to renewables and new technologies.
You’ll contribute to a variety of HVDC and FACTS modelling and studies, including dynamic analysis, fault analysis, RMS and EMT simulations, as well as dynamic performance studies (DPS) and control interaction assessments to ensure compliance with all relevant requirements. Your role will also involve safeguarding the integrity and reliability of the network for HVDC and FACTS connections, ensuring continued operability and safety.
What You'll Do
- Undertaking, interpreting and acting upon Power System analysis to facilitate HVDC transmission network investment planning across multiple timescales.
- Working across HVDC CoE’s Power System Engineering functions to deliver rounded and fully considered end-to-end network solutions.
- Scoping Power system studies and technical work with clear objectives that lead to clearly defined strategic & business outcomes. Delivering within scope budget and time.
- Lead on/contribute to/ contribute with support to the overall development of the HVDC and FACTS system in line with National Grid ET strategy and ambition, and the needs of the System Operator and Customers.
- Lead/ Ensure/ contribute to compliance of HVDC and FACTS systems with the NETS SQSS, STC and Grid Code, particularly in relation to power electronics devices’ dynamic performance, identifying all associated transmission system investment and customer compliance requirements.
- Work with internal and external stakeholders to establish new/modify existing codes and practices to reflect new technologies, market initiatives and changes, design policy and solutions.
- Contribute to the development of national and international agreed models/standards to safeguard National Grid’s interests and ensure consistency with international best practice.
- Prepare and present technical information to Customersand other appropriate technical panels or groups.
- Drive efficiency improvements in the approach to major pieces of work through new approaches, clear activity scoping and controls that are geared towards specific ET outcomes within the bounds of our regulatory agreements.
About You
- Strong proficiency in RMS and EMT simulation tools DIgSILENT PowerFactory, PSCAD
- Solid understanding of HVDC and FACTS technologies, including their control systems
- Knowledge of meshed AC DC network design and integration of DC systems during network development and planning stages
- Ability to review technical reports for a range of studies, including DPS and control interaction analyses
- Experience with programming languages such as DPL and Python
- Effective stakeholder management skills, including presenting complex technical topics
- Strong technical report writing capabilities
- Hands-on experience in HVDC and FACTS studies or design within the power industry, consultancy, manufacturing or academia
What You'll Get
A competitive salary between £61,000 – £75,000 dependent on capability
