National Grid is hiring a Commercial Strategy Lead - This position is based from our North / Central / South office's however we offer flexible hybrid working options.

Job Purpose

Reporting into a Commercial Strategy Manager (Band D), the Commercial Strategy Lead is responsible for developing and delivering the commercial and contract strategy for major Electricity Transmission projects within their region. This role is essential for ensuring the seamless transition of commercial delivery between Customer and Network Development and Infrastructure Delivery teams.

The Commercial Strategy Lead will engage with various stakeholders, both within National Grid and externally with our supply chain delivery partners, to ensure alignment on project objectives, commercial strategy, cost efficiency, and risk management. Strong analytical and negotiation skills are crucial for success in this role, as is the ability to communicate proactively and effectively across teams to foster collaboration and drive project success.

What You'll Do

  • Proactively collaborate with relevant business units to develop early visibility of the project pipeline within the portfolio.
  • Build and maintain strong, long-term collaborative relationships with supply chain partners.
  • Translate business requirements into clear and actionable supply chain requirements by engaging with stakeholders to understand and challenge demand, ensuring optimal solutions for National Grid.
  • Comprehensive commercial strategy development to include early Contractor involvement, staging of contracts and setting NEC4 main option, secondary options, and also including incentivisation regimes.
  • Identify capacity and capability bottlenecks in the supply chain and proactively address challenges that may arise in the contracting of projects.
  • Collaborate with Procurement and other functions to secure resources to transition allocated projects into contracted projects.
  • Provide key stakeholders with updates, insights, and recommendations. Where required, provide support and data to managers for Ofgem and any regulatory reporting.
  • Identify and mitigate key risks that could impact the delivery of the supply chain plan.
  • Develop contract data, in collaboration with relevant business stakeholders, review and challenge, tender costs, resources, and programmes submitted by contractors to ensure value for money.
  • Lead the preparation of risk and contingency allowances, at all stages from business needs case to award of construction contracts.
  • Ensure adherence to commercial and financial processes, governance requirements, and procedures.

About You

  • Experience working on large-scale capex infrastructure projects in a commercial or procurement role within a corporate environment.
  • Direct experience with construction contracts, particularly NEC contract frameworks.
  • In-depth understanding of strategic supply chain management within a regulated environment, including contract management and risk management.
  • Proven ability to develop contracts, particularly construction contracts, and build commercial strategies.
  • Strong commercial acumen, with highly analytical and numerate skills, complemented by excellent influencing, persuasion, communication, and interpersonal abilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly engage, forge strong relationships, and manage key stakeholders effectively.
  • Advanced data analytics skills to challenge large data sets and interpret findings; experience with Power BI and Power Query is preferable.
  • Ability to prepare reports and collate information effectively.
  • Understanding of the regulatory environment and regulated procurement is desirable.
  • Familiarity with project management principles, with evidence of programme management and experience in matrix structures.
  • Knowledge of the electricity transmission system beneficial

A competitive salary between £48,000 – £60,000 dependent on capability

As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus based on personal and company performance and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.
